Lou, Jan,

The paleness is real - the darker photos were taken in very dull light and make it look darker than it was in real life. I think Jan's suspicions could be correct;)

Cheers,
Andrew

marinus x hyperboreus??? could be a possibility. certainly an interesting bird! :smoke:

more than just a black hind part

same 2 birds, a bit more of them.

and 2 blurry crops of 2 same aged, in same moulting stage, what? taken at the same time at the same place as the first 2 birds.

Lou,

Yes GBBxGlauc was the mooted id of the bird I posted, base on the feedback I got at the time - on the deck it had a more glauc structure, and it did look like a young GBB with reduced dark markings which had been dipped in flour - it really stood out! The underside of the primaries was genuinely pale cream whilst all the primaries on the upperside had subterminal chevrons.

As for your recent horrors, the flying ones are michahellis?? Not sure about the 2 back ends.....reduced white crescent suggests not fully adult - 3rd cal year yellow-leggeds?? or it is trick and they are common (mew) gulls! or worse Caspian.......

hi andrew,

the flying ones are michahellis in their core distribution range: in german YLG is called "mediterranen gull". and there's only one other larger gull sp breeding in that region...see the legs.

who's painting them, did you find out? it looks :eek!::eek!::eek!:

pego marsh as well as the albufera NP near valencia are brilliant for watching audouin's! just being back from there.

hello Lou.
I never found out why the bird was in that condition. It is still a mystery.
The best place i have found for Audouins has been Menorca ( at least to photograph!)

beautiful pix of a beautiful gull, derek, thanks for sharing!
i imagine it is even more satisfying seeing them at their breeding sites, displaying etc., than just close range views in paddyfields. lovely voices they have too!

some YLGs from pego marshes.

i'm sorry, couldn't manage to focus them right in a hurry and these are crops. just wanted to show this strange 3cy plumage where they still have very immature dark underwing, usually with unbroken black tail band (rel. narrow and contrasting edged for 2nd generation rectrices in the first pic), but with adult like bare parts: quite many did have bright yellow legs already and some even adult like bills (without dark subterminal bands! see 2nd pic).

the last bird (unfortunately totally unsharp pic) was a 2cy i think with very plain silky brown 2nd and poss. some 3rd generation(?) coverts & scapulars and a large amount of pale/fleshy colour on inner bill. i have seen such ind. already but they are confusing.

bicoloured bill in 2cy YLG

hi all gullerists!

being at the YLG theme again, i'd like to tell about a bird i recently saw at bodensee (southern germany). no photos.

it looked like a fairly normal darkish 2cy YLG structurally, bill a bit on the long side, many feathers worn and generally heavily moulting (normal for 01.june).

the only thing that really struck me was its bill colour: it looked like the scanned pic i attach below of the caspian gull that flies together with the YLG (from olson's gulls book, page 291, pic 375): colourless at base of bill and only outer bill with a dark subterminal mark, which is often seen in autumn 2cy caspian, not so in summer 2cy YLG, usually with all dark or just a little fleshy at the base. now i know that bill colour is among the most variable things in immature gulls, but this one was really striking - and i couldn't find any pic on the net of such an ind. : 1st summer michahellis with strongly bicoloured bill ("glaucous-gull-typish").

what do you think?

happy birding,

don't know what's happening, i can't attach pics at the moment.
p.s. what age do you think is the caspian gull in pic 375???

suddenly attachements work again :gh:
this is pic 375, you know it.
1cy or 2cy caspian? (taken in october 2000 in romania by annika forsten). bill pattern similar to that 1st june 2cy michahellis described above.

bill pattern and apparently washed demarcation of black tail band made me think 2cy but now i'm inclined more towards a 1cy (may be it is obvious for more experienced gullers) due to the strong dark breast pattern merging into broad collar and not so pale inner primary window as it usually is in 2nd gen. primaries (plus there's a small p10 mirror in the majority of cachinnans i think). right?

@ Lou, note the broad white edges on the tops of the inner primaries, the inner primary windows looks me pale and good enough for 2cy, there is also a lot of contrast in the pale inner primary windows and dark outer primaries what it's less conspicuous in 1cy. p10 is on this picture not easy to assess so it's very difficult to see a mirror(if they is present)!
