a 2cy (also croatia, mali losinj)

this bird (27.5.) looks like having an (almost) plain grey mantle (scaps + upper back) despite being in its 1st summer. this would be the earliest date i have encountered for that (in august i have seen 2cy michahellis with plain grey scaps). sorry for quality, pics are heavily cropped.

baby birds need help

Hi. My name is Theresa and I have signed up to get some expert advice. I own a pet shop and a man brought in two young birds that he found. One appears to be injured ( eyes not open and difficulty holding head up and moving it back and forth). The other has eyes open and better head control. They have feathers and have been peeing and pooping. I don't know what kind of birds they are and am hoping you can help me.
I am sorry to ask these questions in reply to your post but i couldn't figure out how to send my own
Thanks
Theresa

A really don't know where and when this pic was taken. Because it is a large panorama I broke it in two pics attched here. If anybody needs a better version I have a tiff at 150 dpi, 100 centimeters.

Hu Cristian.

Caspian Gull primary pattern.

JanJ

Hi JanJ,

Obviously I agree that the wing tip (large P10 and P9 white mirrors, small amount of black etc) identify the bird as a Caspian Gull, but I'm intrigued by the wing and tail feathers condition...Attached here are three more (blurry - sorry!) pics with the same bird.

hi cristian,

pretty strong bill and thick legs indicate a male. note very pale (yellow) iris in this bird. primary moult has reached p4 (being shed), new p1-2 are fully grown, p3 almost grown.
in summer, just before and during their complete moult, many gulls look quite messy, cristian, some more, others less.

cheerio,

Thank you for comments Lou.
I also have some pics with 2cy, 3cy, 4cy and adult Yellow-legged Gulls taken in the same place. Unfortunately not very good ones, but I will soon upload a few.

hi full-folks

while i'd still like to comment on the panorama of yellow-legged (if even YLG) gulls in post 946 (thanks to CM i have the larger res. pic), there's these two recently shot 2cy LBBG, one on visa rauste's site and one on hannu koskienen's that i'd like to talk of:

http://www.helsinki.fi/~rauste/gulls/ammis01.html and

http://www.elisanet.fi/hj.koskinen/2cyheu28_Tara20090606.html

while the heuglini on hannu's site (by petri salo) is obvious, visa's bird could be (graellsii/intermedius)? due to different moult schedule?

attached another misidentification: i took this young fellow as a juv -> 1st winter yellow-legged gull (!), now i can't understand why i didn't see it as a boy caspian...it's all there with - its bill still growing :eat:

well, it's a nice unusual bill - sharply bicoloured, but not unseen.
i thought it would be nice to see the moult stage in upperwing coverts. and in this angle they look dark grey (but that's nothing to worry, just a photo effect). medians as always ahead of the others...
