one more gull pic..

.. from mali losinj

what a pity that the deep crimson colour of orbital and gape of the original file (RAW) transformes into reddish orange in this jpg. this way i can't show how beautiful it really looks!

nice shots of juvies, cristian. since they're one of the harder challenges (if to separate from cachi) it's not unwise to take pics of many ind.; anyway thanks for sharing, at least these all look very good for michahellis although the large tertial crescents of the bird in pic 1 causes some pain ... sure i have seen such (on visa's large compilation of bulgarian 1cy and in 1-2 ind. of your last year's mamaia shots. the pale borders in 1s gen. YLG tertials usually are sharply demarcated and narrow - but this is only one of the many pretty common variations...

hi cristian,

i'm very short in time so i'll run through ID-ing them and might come back tonight on it. what a cachinellis-paradise...

1. 2cy cachi (i love these freshly moulted autumn caspians!)
2. ad (male?) cachi
3. 2cy micha
4. ad micha but a tough one - with a hell of a long tongue on underside of old p10!
5. 2cy micha (i think)
6. ad (female?) micha - very classic
7., 8. and 9 = 2cy micha
10. ad female(?) cachi
11. flock of cachinnans of all ages, i think i can't make out any micha except maybe for the bird in the background left.

Hi, Gull Corner!!!
I managed to digiscope this Gull yesterday during my observation at Axios Delta.
My question always: Cachi or Micha?

Also note the pattern of the underside of p10 in odys gull, all dark with no pale tongue visible, which together with body and bill structure makes it a Yellow-legged.
I would say that gull nr 4 is a Caspian on p10 pattern.
Very nice images Cristian.
Compared to several 2k Yellow-legged seen in Sweden recently, primary moult score is approx. the same compared to Cristians here.

correct. 1st bird is a 2cy YLG on stucture and bold pattern on coverts. nice 1cy in 4-5 showing the start of postjuvenile moult with new 1st winter scapulars - typically bold double-anchor shaped.

jan, prob. your right with bird 4 in the previous batch - caspian (male type), although in many respects it shows "intermediate" features (to my eyes) - i thought having seen that sort of rounded tongue on underside of michahellis p10 already, maybe just a little bit shorter, but not much. surely, such a long tongue usually is considered being out of variation of YLG (and there certainly exist caspians with shorter tongues) but it is so restricted pretty much on the outer edge of inner web with a lot of black close to the keel and it is rounded as in many michahellis with long tongues - that was the reason why i thought YLG.

cheers - fun again with pics from the black sea.
thanks for that, cristian.B :)

hi cristian,

male 1cy caspian in #997! with that big bill, very pointed tip, strong collar, pale distal parts to MC and GC and thumbnail-like broad tertial crescents as well as general appearance (jizz) there can't be any doubt.

all birds (except the BHG) in #998 are YLGs.
that juv/1cy caspian is a good catch! we haven't got many pics of juv caspians.

cheers

Aha, so I was right (I was hoping 1cy Caspian, but...). There are a few more pics with the same bird. If you need them... But unfortunately I don't have any pic with the bird flying.
