MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!

Had a nice christmassy start to the day, with the robin sitting on the wall in the garden, after being woken up at 8:00am!!!! by my little sister.

Morning Luke & everyone,

Got the minimum amount of sleep as is regular on the Christmas Eve. My eldest did not come home til 12.30am and was very drunk so had to stay up for a few hours to make sure he was ok, got to bed about 2am. Youngest then had us up about 6ish (8 oclock would have been a lie on Luke!) so feeling rather tired this morning.

Capser & I took a stroll over the Cardi & then onto the Blue lake and surrounds. Today's spots - Before I left the house one Coal Tit on the feeders then crossing the road I was treated to a Robin in full voice (the was one of 4 robins on my walk) then about 1/2 dozen goldfinch in the trees walking down to the pond which had about a dozen BH Gulls. Through the woods I spotted my 1st green woodie (I had great views of one a bit later too) then a wren in the bushes. Couple of Blackbirds and some Crows before I got my best view of the day......the setting moon! As I crossed the road to the ponds I caught sight of the full moon and through the bins it looks fantastic - wish I had taken my camera innit. The ponds were a bit quiet although the resident comorant landed just as I stopped to watch a Kestrel on the electric wire by the Nye Bevan stones. The top half of the woods was teeming with birds, 3 robins, couple of great tits, blue tits and some LT tits. Then I stopped to watch about 30+ siskins flitting from tree to tree. This is when I saw the Green woodie on the path through the trees. It was at this point I saw something perched in the trees which I could not make out - on closer inspection it was a collared dove. I would have liked to stay around a bit longer as there was plentiful singing amongst the trees but family visits needed doing. On the way back I saw 5 house sparrows. Not bad I thought then as I arrived in the house just now I saw some LT Tits on the feeder, seems they have found it and look like becoming regular visitors to the garden, great stuff. Picked up my camera which only had the small kits lens and managed to get a record shot through the dirty kitchen window - perhaps I will have to set up the tripod and stalk the little buggers before the weeks out - would love to get something decent of them.

Just back from lunch...couldn't finish it just too big.....got a call in the middle of lunch - my mum is having the op atm - just wating to see if its ok to go down to see her. On top of that my sister's daughter had her waters break this morning at 4 oclock - hospital sent her back home for xmas dinner so quite an eventful day all told - we were betting if there would be an extra place around at the table before we finished ! Quick dog walk and then make the call.
Nice moon shot Mike, that this morning was wonderful.

I've got lumps of it round the back
At home I have a small apple tree which I have hung some feeders on and I have had a good number of birds visit but I was pleasantly surprised to have had a Bullfinch visit on a couple of occasions....that might not seem a big deal to some but I am a newbie to all this and for me it was great to see such a lovely bird at close quarters...

I was excited to see one on my garden hedge this morning, I usually see a few when I'm out walking but this was a first for my garden.

Garnlydan Reservoir this evening produced an argentatus Herring gull, at least 3 yellow legged gull plus usual herring, black headed gull and 8 lesser black backed gull. Wigeon have returned with 9 this evening, plus 4 reed bunting in THE bush next to the res. Also Brambling are still roosting in Carno forest. Saw a few hundred through the scope.

This morning's walk around the Cardi produced 11 BH Gulls on the pond and in the woods and around:

20+ siskin
10+ LT Tits
Blue & Great tits
C CRow
Magpie
Blackbird

Highlight of the day so far though was the Buzzard flying low through the trees, caught me a bit by surprise..very pleasant surprise though.

Off to the Gwent shortly, not sure if I will bother with any detours today - the weather is worse than yesterday.

Went down to Llangybi this morning to look for some of gwents bewick swans. I have never seen one in gwent and given that the numbers are getting lower every year i thought i'd make an effort. But i failed! Did see a few swans but they were mute swans. I did see some more swan in the distance but all i could make out were large white blobs, so they might have been bewicks? I did see 2 shelduck which was a nice suprise. Then i went to llandegfeth for a quick scan but the gates at the fishermans carpark were locked? so i didnt bother.
All in all, not a very seccessful morning.

i heard about a key for somewhere from GOS, now i know where! But is the key for the Large green steel gates or the normal gate just inside?

I noticed Keith Jones saw a few bewicks down at goldcliff this morning, perhap they will use to pools to roost on?
