H5 Zoom, directional mike (1 Viewer)

I use mine with Sennheizer ME66 but I wonder if the original directional mike that is made for the H5 is good enough for bird recordings?

I use the Zoom SGH-6 with the H5. The ME66 appears to be better with a lower noise floor, but the H5/SGH-6 is more portable with one-handed operation. The XY mic that comes with the H5 is nice, but doesn't have the directionality one might want for bird recordings. It's all about the trade-offs...

Ha! Well, that is my question if the SGH-6 works well? It is directional no?

Yes, the SGH-6 is a short shotgun, so it has some directionality and an ability to reject side noises because of its interference tubes. Here is a picture if you haven't seen in online.

Cheers!

Hi....yes I have seen it but I am wondering how effective it is in the field. It isnt cheap so dont want to invest in it unless it is good enough.

Sorry, I have no basis to compare that. I have an acquaintance who records with an H5 and an ME-66. His noise floor is lower and with better directionality, but at a higher cost and much larger form factor. This setup works for me, but I also have been having some success with my Android phone, RecForge II app, and a plug in Røde Video Mic Me-C. That's a small form factor!

So many ways of doing it. Thank you for that!

My SGH-6 has the performance one might expect from something designed for interviews in public places, which is mainly what they had in mind when they designed it. It has the advantage that the whole H5/SGH-6 will fit nicely on my Rycote shock mount with grip and does give a degree of rejection that will be good enough for some birding environments, however it isnt a replacement for the ME66. I can justify it as it is used in a variety of different environments, but even then it has its limitations. I don't think I could justify it just for birding use.

That makes sense......
