Last Birds of the Year Well, it looks like the birding year is over. Just pipped Joanne by the slenderest of margins. December 31st. A dull finish - dawn drifted to dusk with barely a lift in the light levels - murk and mist joining the ends of the day at the end of the year. And to finish? A Treecreeper's mouse-like movements over the lichen-crusted ash, calling in whispers as it crept upward over trunk and boughs. A Bullfinch's undulation as it flew to the wood, its melancholic piping closing the year. Rooks wending their way to roost and gulls high in the low cloud - Herring gulls amongst them - a garden scarcity. Cormorants too. A Buzzard in the field as light fails finally. A Wren sings in silhouette as Blackbirds chack to sleeping. But last of all a Kestrel: winnowing and calling parakeet-like as it sees off a rival; the day, the year, almost done. Happy New Year to all thread readers - especially the regulars and contributors - here's to the next year's garden bird competition. H B (:B (:B (:
