No sign of the Black Redstarts, I have seen the 3 together on odd occasions since November. This year though they seem a bit hit and miss unlike previouse years when I have seen them on a daily basis. I was wondering if its because they have been upgrading the security fences.

Was the LEO in the bushes near the motorway or out near the point?
I'll be in Hampshire on Weds, and could make a dash....

Or if the red-breasted goose is still at Wittering.....

Jon

Well I guess it may well roost in the same bush for a while.

It was in the bushes not far from the furthest car park. If you set off along the western sea wall, ie out towards the sea on the path immediately by the cars, then stop about halfway towards the seats/viewing area, and look left into the middle there are many tall bushes. It was near the top of one of the highest of those. Very well camouflaged though, and difficult to describe its position more precisely!

You wouldn't have seen it from the tarmaced path alongside the motorway, even though that may actually be a little closer as it goes behind the bushes.

Then go a little further out and turn round and look at the avocets behind you on the mud flats if the tide is right!

Both the Long-Eared Owl and the Avocets were there again this afternoon (1-2.30pm). Best way I found to find the LEO is to let someone else find it for you! It was quite high up in one of the highest bushes, as Ken describes.
With a Glaucous Gull at Hayling Oyster Beds earlier (my first one in about 20 years!) and Redpolls in the garden this morning, it has been a very good day.

I asked this question on another thread and at the suggestion of johnnyh I am re-posting it here.

Any comments would be appreciated.

According to Birdguides there has been a Scaup at Rooksbury Mill, Andover and 4 White Fronted Geese at Tundry Pond (near Fleet) for a number of days now.

I am thinking of taking a trip to both locations this weekend and as I have never been to either I was hoping someone may be able to give me some information.

Specifically, are both locations open to the public and if so is entry free?

Also, is car parking available?

Thanks in advance.

Regards

Dave

Ken, I was there early on Thursday morning, and was shown the bird by someone already there! It was foggy and raining, so I didn't stay long. Thanks anyway.

I went on to West Wittering and after some lengthy walking and searching, found the Red-breasted Goose too!

Later on our way to Devon we stopped at Faccombe, but the Rough-legged Buzzard was hiding. Plenty of Red Kites though!

Bustards?

Keep meaning to try to see the geat bustards on Salisbury plain via the official arrangements but never seem to get organised enough to book. Are they beginning to spread out into our patch? Anywhere in Hampshire to see one? Or are they still very much a 'hush-hush project'?

Amazing how things do change isn't it? A few years ago I was absolutely delighted to see my first red kites high in the sky in Scotland. Now they're pretty much commonplace right over my house.

At Bransbury on Friday 2 Barn Owls, at least 5 Short-eared Owls, ringtail Hen Harrier (my first for this site) and Woodcock.
On Sunday LEO at Farlington showing nicely. Shame about the idiots walking around under its bush, who ironically couldn't see it while those on the seawall could. Why??? :C

There's always a few, Tom, like in any hobby. Ever since the Red-crested Pochard's been at Badminston I've seen a few people climb high onto banks, wander on to the Gravel Pit and step straight out into the open. It's only been a few and I expect the birds are used to disturbance on a working gravel pit next to a pig farm with bird scarers - but once the birds have all flown they don't come back for some time thus f***ing it up for other birders.

I guess they're just not used to 'fieldcraft'

Rough-legged Buzzard reported on Birdguides today; apparently seen yesterday at Backley Bottom in the NF, anyone know anything about this?

All I know is that I stood for a few hours in a very cold wind (on allegedly the warmest day of the year so far) at Faccombe yesterday and the RLB didn't turn up there, so it is possible that it has moved on.
There were a few kites and common buzzards to watch (and Willow Tit nearby, which made the trip worthwhile).

Lepe/Badminston

84 Med Gulls on the foreshore at Lepe this morning c.9a.m. The Red-crested Pochard was still showing well at Badminston GP and there were at least 29 Med Gulls there plus a Green Sandpiper.

Cheers

Hi everyone. I just came back from a few days in the New Forest and saw some great birds...goshawks (3 at once!), hawfinch, male hen harrier, crossbills. Also called in at Farlington and saw the LEO (from the sea wall)and black brant. The weather was kind to us and it was a good trip....will definately go back sometime.
