Also 2 Mute swans,1 heron and 1 Kingfisher on the river. Then the Heavens openend but i still managed to get 2 Mistle Trushes. Not a bad day out!

Hi John,

I had no luck with the Yellow Wagtail.
I was helping Richard getting setup on the internet and we noticed the report on www.birders-online.co.uk at 14:25. Was on the bank at Tice's Meadow by 14:30. Not until I got home that I saw they were reported to Birdguides at 13:30. I assume they were seen in the meadow. I've seen Yellow Wagtail once before in 2005. The Dunlin was present allday in the meadow. The Common Sandpiper was in the north corner where the non-breeding Swans hangout. It did fly down the lake and landed on the road bank where the grass meets the water. With the water level at the highest I've have seen there are only a few places suitable to feed.

Tice's Meadow over the next 7wks could produce some interesting sightings.

Can someone give me some directions for Tice's Meadow, as I'm quite local, and so really ought to go and look at it once in a while.

Migrants a plenty at Tices this morning, found the 2 Yellow Wags on the floods, bit flighty though as a Fox was about. Also there 3 LRP's, a nice female Wheatear, 5 Swallows, 2 Lapwings, 3 Little Grebe, at least 2 Whitethroats, 3 Linnets, 5 Common Terns. No sign of the Common Sand at Tongham GP but did find the first returning Sedge & Reed Warbs, plenty of very showy Blackcaps & Chiffchaffs too.
Gents, as regards directions to Tices, if coming from Woking - take the A324 to the junction of the A323 just outside Ash & follow the 323 towards Aldershot, at the traffic lights at the Prince of Wales bear left & follow this road towards Badshot Lea,just before the village you will see a garage on your right, park near that & look across the road & you will see a metal gate, go through this & bear right beside a small copse, you will see a bank, climb this & you will see the meadow. Geordie, if you are coming from the A331, come off at the Aldershot junction & head towards Aldershot, the rest of the directions then apply.
Let us know how you get on, it's getting interesting now with more migrants arriving who knows what will turn up!

Cheers,

Hi John,

Got nearly all the migrants on my late Sunday visit except the ones I wanted most as they are only seen on passage the Yellow Wagtail and Sedge Warbler. Hopefully better luck next Saturday during my Tongham Bird Atlas square Survey.

Aldershot till I die!
Managed a couple of hours at Tices & Tongham GP this morning on my day off some more migrants passing through albeit in small no's. Still 1 Wheatear at Tices, 4 House Martin & 2 Sand Martin through, 4 Common Tern looking settled on the workings, 2 Lapwing on the meadow chasing the LRP's of which there were 4 today. Also found a solitary Snipe asleep in the grass, 2 Little Grebe busy nest building, 2 Whitethroat, & 2 Chiffchaff. Richard Horton has also reported a Yellow Wag & a Lesser Whitethroat this morning. At Tongham I found 4 Reed Warblers vying for territories, 3 Blackcaps, 4 Chiffchaffs, 2 Whitethroats, & a lone Gadwall.
Not a bad start to the day, off to celebrate the Shots glorious league triumph later!!

A Whimbrel reported today (23rd) on flooded meadow at Tice's Meadow at 16:15. According to my un-official list it is a first for Tice's Meadow. It becomes the 104th species seen in the past 41 months.

Hi John,

Don't mention Shelduck. Rushed over this morning to see them but they had gone! Then after being home for a few hours heard they were back. Hopfully they will hang around longer than the one you found last year. They can summer in a area without breeding. In the past 2 years during the BTO BBS Survey in the Windsor Great Park, near the Long Walk I have found up to 10 loafing in a field just next to a small stream. Tice's Meadow looks much better habitat.

Still 2 Shelduck at Tices this morning, also had a Buzzard drift over as well as the usual suspects. Popped over to Thursley afterwards & was rewarded with 5 Hobby's over the bog, (all up together!), a nice male Redstart, Tree Pipit, Willow Warbler, singing Woodlark, & Willow Warbler.

John.
