Birding at the taxpayer's expense. Head down, bin
Good to see the Wigeon. This is the first Autumn bird at Tice's as far as I know. Beginning to think that the Greenshank is a lingering one!

By the afternoon duck numbers had increased slightly more. Shoveler from 11 to 14 and Teal from 5 to 7.

The Wigeon and the Greenshank were still present when I left at 5pm.

STATS
Todays Wigeon is the seventh record and the earliest recorded at Tices Meadow since records began.
14 Shoveler is the highest number recorded at Tices Meadow. The record being broken for the third day running.

Two brief trips to Tice's today, both with Rich H. Three Ringed Plovers (2 ad, 1 juv) during the day with one Dunlin. Green and Common Sandpiper numbers down with only 3 and 1 present but wildfowl numbers continue to increase with 12 Shoveler, 13 Gadwall and 10 Teal. The afternoon visit produced at least 5 adult Yellow-legged Gulls amongst the Lesser Black-backs. 3, possibly 4, Common Terns remain.

Is there any good kingfisher locations around sunny Aldershot ?

The River Blackwater, which runs along the edge of Tice's Meadow, is good at this time of year and one has been seen around the silt ponds at Tice's. As you will be aware though nothing is guaranteed and sightings are intermittent.

Anyone able to tell me what Moors Green nature reserve is like?

Hi,

Check out the Moor Green Lakes website www.mglg.org.uk I must admit I've not visited there for about 20 years but always hear good reports. Also a better chance of seeing/watching a Kingfisher there rather than just seeing a blue flash.

Thanks Rich.

I have been to Moor Green on a regular basis. Worth checking at any time of the year although the edges tend to be overgrown and less attractive to Waders nowadays. Check the Barnacle Goose flock as this is a species on the Hamsphire/Berkshire lists as a self contained feral species; southern Hampshire birders actually leave the joys of the South to see this flock which often crosses the county borders and end up in Surrey or Hampshire. Singleton birds have been seen at Tice's.

There are a number of locations around Aldershot but most are 'Heathlands' which you have a glut of in Dorset. Might be worth a trip to Staines Reservoir, 30 mins away, or the London Wetland Centre, 45 mins, if you have time. Are you on a MoD course in Aldershot?

Popped over to have a look at Moors Green today, nice walk. Good views of green sandpiper. Also lapwing, teal, coots, widgeon, canada geese, mute swan. Around the lake were a noisy flock of tits inc long tailed and a pair of GSW's.

No kingfisher though.
