Little at Tice's this morning although the Lesser Black-backed Gull and wildfowl numbers are increasing. Two Bullfinches at the entrances on Lower Farnham Road and contact calls of both Chiffchaff and Willow Warbler in the willows. None seen though due to the rain.

I hope that Frensham qualifies for this thread. I spent a couple of hours there on 29th September and came across a couple of Greylag Geese, Great Crested Grebe, Wheatear and 5 Woodlarks (the latter two species on a very burnt-out Frensham Common). Not surprisingly, no sign of Stonechat or Dartfords. A Great Spotted Woodpecker on the totally blackened remains of a tree was a bit bizarre.

David, I'm afraid Churt Common is perhaps the only place local to Farnham where you might see Dartford Warblers. The last two winters have killed most of the population off.

Day off today so put in a couple of hours at Tices, 4 Yellow Legged Gulls present with the LBB's & BHG's inc a smart 1st winter. Also noted 14 Snipe flushed from the meadow! possibly a personal best at Tices.

Thanks for that; I guess the combination of two hard winters and the fire will rule out Dartfords from Frensham for quite a while.

Nice find John.

The Little Stint was still present at 16:15 in the workings prefering the island with the football on. During the afternoon I counted the Cormorants and there were 54! Numbers have been building in the past 10 days before that the record count was just 8. There are/were some fish (Perch?) in the workings so I expect Badshot Lea Ponds/Tongham GP may lose a few fish. The only hope it that this high number attract a Shag during the winter.

Where did you see the Kingfishers?

I saw one when returning to the car on Pea Bridge. Must be after the odd Stickleback as the water under the bridge can't be more than an inch deep.

Hi Kev,

The Kingfishers flew past me whilst I was watching the Stint from the meadow, from the workings heading towards the silt pond area.

Cheers,

John.

The 19 Golden Plover were joined by 2 larger flocks and 152 were present at Tices as I left. I sadly flushed 9 Ruff on arrival which flew south over Runfold. The Snipe had increased to 14 and there was one single Dunlin in amongst the GPs. The only notable passerines were 12 overflying Fieldfare. Plenty on berry bushes so will keep a look out.

Other species: Lesser Black-backed Gull (127), Great Cormorant (24), Teal (24), Black-headed Gulls (c100), Meadow Pipit (6).

British Life 317 (latest White-tailed Plover)
