Mike, I find what you say very true, for various reasons. First, performance differences of newer vs older models are naturally getting smaller and smaller, since the older ones are already very good and improvements get increasingly difficult to implement (I myself sometimes even think that e.g. Zeiss had reached its zenith with the FL line - judging from the ones I own, i.e. 8x56, 7x42 and 8x32 - yes, I hear all of those who say that the FS provides the "non plus ultra" in sharpness (and I own an FS and like it a lot), but sharpness is not everything in a bino). Then , we are all getting younger and younger ;) so our eyes get better and better in spotting the performance diffrences of the new alphas - or at least that seems to be the impression when you read some of the reviews in forums like this. Hmm .... or maybe it's really the other way around ? ;) [[[ when do people usually buy their Porsches and Ferraris? When they are in their sixties and their backs and knees are already so stiff that they hardly get into these nice cars ...]]] And last, I have always maintained that I bet against everybody that with all the FS, EL SV, Noctivid and EDGs of this world I would not be able to identify a far away bird that I would not also be able to identify with a same size Trinovid BA or BN (even if many things obviously speak for the newer models, no doubt). So far, nobody has proved me wrong in this bet. Just my two cent.
