Hello from Athens via Berlin & NZ! (1 Viewer)

Hello everyone! I'm AJ, originally from New Zealand but recently moved to Athens, Greece after many years of living in Berlin, Germany.

I'm a novice birder who finally decided to give it a go after many years of thinking, “that sounds so cool but it's probably too hard for me to learn now.” I went out for the first time on the weekend in my local park, just to practice observing and identifying the local (and pretty common) birdlife. I was worried I might get bored or distracted but I loved it so much! (The fact that my only tattoos are of birds might have been a hint that I would genuinely enjoy it, but I digress.)

The only thing that has spoiled it for me (joking) is thinking of all the birds in New Zealand and other places I've visited that I never recorded anywhere 😅 I ended up going through my photos of my last visit to NZ just to identify all the birds I could find! I think it's safe to say I'm already becoming obsessed...

I have a field guide and a set of binoculars (Levenhuk Nitro ED 10x42) on their way to me right now and I can't wait to try them out and check out all the birds I can find in and around my new city. We also have a vacation to Alonissos (island in a marine reserve) coming up, where I'm hoping to spot more.

I'm really happy to be here and meet you all and learn from you. I'd also love to know if you have any tips to share that you wish you knew when you were just starting out 🙂

Thanks and see you around!

Welcome to Birdforum. I hope you enjoy your visits.

Hi AJ and a warm welcome to you from all the Staff and Moderators. I guess my big tip would be to relax and enjoy yourself when you're out in the fresh air and don't get too frustrated by the "ones that got away". We all get birds that we couldn't identify, difficult angles, awkward light etc.

I'm sure you will enjoy it here and I hope to hear about the birds that you see round about you.

Great tip and thank you for the warm welcome Delia!

Hi AJ, welcome to the forum. I totally agree with Delia, relax, enjoy being outside and seeing the birds. The id’s will come.

Thank you both!

I'm already enjoying this new hobby so much. Today I was simply out for a walk and saw a crow: I've loved them for a long time, but this time I didn't just think “crow” but “hooded crow”! Learning more about even the birds I'm already familiar with brings me so much joy, and I'm very happy to have found such a welcoming community!
