I rescued two baby Robins at the end of April. Sadly one of them passed away last Monday after being traumatised by a crow that attacked their cage whilst they were outside getting some fresh air. I’m worried about letting the survivor (Gabriel) go...Gabriel still calls for me to feed him but is showing some signs of independence. I’m going to hold onto him for another week. Does anyone have any ideas please?

Hi there Janet and a warm welcome to you from those of us on staff here at BirdForum (y)

Not sure if it is able to fly yet but what I would do is put your cage on the railing of a porch and for a short while, open the cage door and see where it goes from there. Leave the door open and see if it comes back into it to feed and if not, then hopefully it will be a good sign and it can fend for itself in the wild.

Welcome to Birdforum!

I'd leave the cage outside with the door open and let it have its freedom as you don't want it to be totally dependent on you.

Thank you for your advice...the robin can fly....he’s like a little hummingbird. He’s been with me for approximately 4 weeks and I think he was probably about a week old when I rescued him as his eyes were still shut. I’ll try what you have suggested. Have a great day 🌻
