I went to take down my blue tit box to clean it out and do some maintenance, but found a nest still in there with eight eggs in, in November!
Can I assume this is an abandoned nest? I haven't seen anything going in or out. Thanks.

Hi JM and a warm welcome to you from all the Staff and Moderators. Yes, I'm afraid the adult female must have come to some harm after laying those eggs. They don't brood them until the clutch is complete; laying one egg per day and could have as many as 12. Such as shame.

You can read more about Blue Tits in our Opus article: Eurasian Blue Tit - BirdForum Opus

I'm sure you will enjoy it here and I look forward to hearing your news.

Thank you Delia for the warm welcome and advice. I won't feel so bad about emptying the box. At least once it's emptied its free for overnight roosting.

Indeed it will be, and if this cold weather continues it will prove very popular too no doubt LOL

Welcome to Birdforum. Shame about the abandoned nest, but if you empty and clean the box, I’m sure it will be used for roosting. We have 2 blue tits roosting in ours now.

Hi, welcome to the forum. I think you will find us a friendly and helpful group.
