I'm relatively new to bird watching and really picked up bird watching mostly as a result of photography and looking for birds to photograph. Fortunately, I live in a place in Chicago that is close to a few locations where there are lots of birds to see. In particular, there's a place where a canal comes into the Chicago River that is a favorite spot for Great Blue Herons, Black Crowned Night Herons, and Green Herons over the summer and a lot of diving birds coming down from Canada in the winter
I also owe some thanks to the people on this forum already as I read a lot of reviews of different binoculars and picked up a nice old Nikon 7x35 9.3 Wide Field that already helped me spot a Belted Kingfisher and a Northern Flicker last weekend
