Birds & Company - Madeira Island Birdwatching
Hi everyone!

We are a team of bird lovers from Madeira Island.

We're excited to be apart of this group and share some pictures of the unique species of our beautiful Island.

Greetings ;)

Hi...welcome......You are from the Islands where Medeira wine is made? Love that wine!!

welcome now, You have good birding in the isles? jim

Hi Birds & Company and a warm welcome to you from all the Staff and Moderators.

I'm sure you will enjoy it here. I look forward to hearing your news and will hopefully see some of your pictures in the Gallery too.

Thanks for the warm welcoming Imans ;)

Indeed the great Madeira wine is named after the Island where it is produced.

We are on a volcanic North Atlantic Portuguese Island - the location is quite privileged, it's called the Macaronesia.

There has been recorded slightly 335 species and subspecies of birds in the Madeira archipelago (Madeira, Porto Santo, Desertas and Selvagens Islands).
A recent work of the Atlas of Breeding Birds of Archipelago of Madeira confirmed a total of 45 breeding birds.

We have 4 endemic species, the Trocaz Piegon and the Madeiran Firecrest but our highlights are definitely the seabirds: Desertas Petrel and Madeira's / Zino's Petrel which have their breeding sites in the mountains of Madeira Island and is one of the rarest birds in the world and the most threatened seabird in Europe ;)

Well...sounds like a good place to bird...

During migration, it would seem you might get lots of lost souls! jim

Had a great week Birding on Madeira in 2010, highlight was a small group of Firecrests feeding just a few feet away oblivious to us, (on the edge of a northern Levada near Porto Moniz).

Wonderful place for birdwatching Madeira.

Welcome to BirdForum! I am sure you will find lots to interest you here, and I hope you enjoy your visits.

Some years ago I stayed at the Jardim Altantico, near Prazeres.

Our hightlight before the sunset and going down for dinner was watching kestrels and buzzards circling in a sunset ballet over a nearby headland. At least I presume they were just common kestrels and buzzards. My binoculars we not good in those days.

You have a nice island. A pity about the methods used to create the levadas. If only they new how much they would be appreciated now.

I remember that lovely restaurante at Ribeiro Frio with the wood burning fire, a welcome sight for quite a few people caught out in a torrential downpour that day.

Thanks Kits.

Yes Stevie, the levadas provide our visitors some of the most amazing sights of the Island. We do fight the contradition of subsisting of tourism and at the same time trying to keep everything as pure and untouched as it is.

Still, our levadas offer some of the most fantastic and dramatic views of mountains that you can't find everywhere and we are really proud of it.

Tom, Ribeiro Frio is a great place! Pitty you caught a rainny day. For the past years we haven't had that much. Today for example, 19th Decemeber 11am ... 22 Degrees ;)

Make sure to ask for some tips about places to visit around and have great food also.

Greetings from the Island
