I am very much so a bird lover of every kind, this is why I am looking for the best advice in my situation.
Soy sister brought me a baby black bird chick (Starling)? Not positive which at this time, anyhow she couldn't put it back in the nest so she brought it to me just over a week ago. I followed the advice I read as far as what to feed it, how often, ECT. She is healthy, and has quite the personality. She is now a fledging but although she can fly ok I am concerned about her ability to forage for food on her own. I have tried everything to get her adjusted to solid foods, bugs & what not but she absolutely refuses to eat much unless it's me feeding her like I had when she was iddy biddy. I know she wants outside (we watch birds outside through the window, she watches so intently.)but I don't want to set her free & not be able to do what she needs to do. She is a small part of everything that's precious in this world. What should I do? I can't find any info specifically to help me make the best decision so I am reaching out.

Hi and a warm welcome to you from all the Staff and Moderators. We have some general guidelines here for the care of injured and baby birds.

It does look to be a Common Starling, which are mostly insect eaters, though will eat seeds and fruit. He does seem about mature enough to fly (is he flapping his wings yet?) Put him outside in a safe area if possible and try scattering some mealworms around the area - live if you can get them, otherwise dried will do. If you feed him some beforehand he should be keen enough to forage for them himself (they do love them).

As they're an introduced species it may be that your wildlife rehabbers may not be interested in taking him in to get over the last stages to freedom, but you can only ask and maybe they'll have some more advice for you.

I'm sure you will enjoy it here and I look forward to hearing your news.

Hi Michelle and a warm welcome to you from Myrtle Beach (y)

Sounds as though you were the perfect person to match up with this little one ;) You might try getting a hold of a local humane society to see if they would take it in til it can be released. Good luck!

Hi, welcome to the forum. I can’t give any advice that KC and Delia didn’t. Good luck with the little fellow.

Hi Michelle, have you thought of taking him/her to a bird sanctuary? You can Google one near you, there seem to be plenty of them. God bless you and the feather baby. 🩷
