Not such an early start as you H2...but i got on my site by about 11 o clock..! Passing the shooters oak i saw nothing..despite close scrutiny...so i ventured further towards last years nesting area...and saw nothing...again! After half an hour my itchy feet got the better of me and i succumbed to the urge to return to the oak. Within seconds i observed a hobby gliding away to perch distantly towards the horizon...and scanning back to the oak...there sat another bird! Hoorah!! Another 30 minutes ticked by before the closer bird took off and quickly sped by my position and circling up over hedgerows was joined by what was obviously a male....so the pair are back..! In due course i will make more detailed observations thru my scope to see if these birds are indeed last years birds...i suspect they are. Plenty of time to do that so for now i'll make do with traveling light and keeping a lower profile with just my bins! Anyway...back to the hobbies! The pair circled and chased each other around the clouds high amongst a small group of swifts. Soaring 'so' high in fact that the swifts began to look larger than the hobbies! My arms ached and my eyes struggled to keep them in focus as they faded in and out of a rain bearing cloud. But before i did eventually lose them..a third hobby joined in the aerial antics! Not unusual methinks and perhaps one of last years youngsters..? I remember a couple of years ago when three hobbies returned to a previous breeding site...and the three became five at one point! So i am a very happy man...my birds are back...:t:
