A beautiful spring-like day with a couple of early migrants. I was only able to bird for a couple of hours, but I added two birds to my Year List, which is now up to 102.

101. Wood Duck
102. Eastern Phoebe

This is the earliest I've ever seen a phoebe, and as far as I can tell, it's the first reported in Indiana this year.

An enjoyable day trip to Norfolk yesterday with Conorbirda2, Thenorthernmonkey, Tav94 and Henerz added:

129. Dartford Warbler
130. Lapland Bunting
131. Shorelark
132. Ross's Goose
133. Bearded Tit
134. Grey Partridge
135. Brambling
136. Red-legged Partridge

103 species recorded in all, although considering this was a White-crowned Sparrow twitch and not a bird race, and with gaps including birds such as Nuthatch and Red-throated Diver, it could have been quite a few more.

Did you not see the sparrow then? I'm going Thursday for the first time, but i just know that a bloody sparrowhawk or cat is going to kill it the day before :C

We did indeed see the Sparrow, stunning views at about 7.30am when it first showed (we had been on site since 5am). I had omitted to mention it, as it was not a yeartick for me, I saw it in January.

I birded this morning for awhile around the oxbow lakes south of Saint Joseph. I did not get any new Missouri birds for the year, but did see a lot of species of waterfowl.

Returning home a little before lunch time I did see a new bird for the year in our yard (Saint Joseph, Missouri).
87. Sharp-shinned Hawk, both perched and flying.

A few minutes ago, just at twilight, I walked into the field behind my house to look for woodcocks. I could hear several "peenting" and performing their aerial displays. I did manage to sneak up to one on the ground and actually had it in my spotlight. This was the first time I've had one on the ground like that. I usually get a quick glimpse as they're flushing or high up while doing aerial displays. Now up to 103.

103. American Woodcock

I added one more bird to my Missouri 2008 Year List this morning.

88. Fox Sparrow, Missouri Western State University Campus, Saint Joseph, Missouri.

It has been rather slow going this year. And with the temperatures bouncing all over the place I don't think it is going to get very much better for awhile! Temperature forcast for tonight is 5 degrees F., brrrrr! Perhaps our returning American Robins are having second thoughts about returning to Missouri a little too early!

Black Wheatear

Bowed but not broken, yet!
A virtually fruitless day chasing birds that were disappearing before I got there although I did manage Red Kite.

162. Red Kite

John

Hi John,

Monti Harrier and Nightingale brings me up to 593, so with Morocco next week it looks like a good annual total is well on the way!!

I can't compete with that Peter.

I had a bad day today. I did manage to find an Iceland Gull and a wintering Chiffchaff but then I went to Cardiff for the Spot Sand and R B Gull but never found them. I got absolutely soaked for my pains plus I spent so long looking for all the birds today that I ran out of time to go to Hereford for the Y B Warbler & L T Duck.

163. Chiffchaff
164. Iceland Gull

With Wallcreeper, Kittiwake & Rock Pipit from France that puts me onto 167.

After a nearly year long hiatus from birding, due to college, moving and various other outside forces, the bug has bitten again this year. After an incredibly slow start in January and most of February, due to weather, with winds averaging around 25 knots. I finally made it to 55 species on the year with a morning trip to Hornsby Bend.

Highlights:

American Pipit
Grasshopper Sparrow
Eared Grebe
Inca Dove
White-eyed Vireo

Im up to 109, and I am pretty sure 110 after a probable self found Caspian Gull at the London Wetlands Centre yesterday. The week before I added 12 year birds, including Little Egret, Red-legged Partridge, Red-breasted Merganser and Hen Harrier.
