A drive around Norfolk & Suffolk gained me 4 more ticks for the year. One of them was a White-spotted Bluethroat at Minsmere. What a stonking looking bird that is. It's just a shame that it was a bit too far from me to get a good photo.

186. Stone Curlew
187. Shorelark
188. White-spotted Bluethroat (the first I have ever seen)
189. Short-eared Owl.

Hi Penny

It's a cracking bird as well. I couldn't believe my luck. The path was under about 5" of water and the birders were split into two groups. One group was at the sluice end and standing on dry ground. The group I was with was standing in water. The bird had been showing between both groups. After just over an hour a group of people walked through the far group and came towards us. At the same time a few birders left the far group so a few of us walked to the other group because of the water. 45 minutes later the bird appeared -- down to twenty feet from where I had been standing. We were over 100 yards away. They were getting unbelievable images. Me - I got some record digiscope shots.

Below are 4 of the best shots. Still at least you can see what it is. What I would have given to have stayed where I originally was.

John

Managed to fit in a decent morning's birding a little further from home.

Anahuac NWR added 9 species to my year list:
Redhead, Glossy Ibis, Cattle Egret, Sora, Eastern Kingbird, Palm Warbler, Seaside Sparrow, Barn Swallow and Yellow-billed Cuckoo.

High Island was very disappointing. Literally the only bird I saw at Boy Scout Woods was a Brown Thrasher.

So that takes my 2008 list for the USA to 145.

That's a bit behind last year's list at this time - but last year I had already taken a trip down to south Texas and that had produced a lot of new birds.

Managed to get out today after class, surprisingly wasnt all that birdy, probably due to the 15 knot wind. Still managed to pick up three year birds, which breaks my personal record for fastest to the century mark.

99. Canada Goose
100. Cattle Egret
101. Blue-gray Gnatcatcher

Left work early this afternoon to chase a Long-tailed Duck, a local rarity. I found my target, as well as two other birds, so my Year List is now up to 338.

336. Horned Grebe
337. Long-tailed Duck
338. Northern Shoveler

I also added Northern Rough-winged Swallow to my ABA Area and Indiana year lists. (I had seen it last month in Honduras).
