Wow!

That's a pretty impressive list for this week, Larry. You're making me pretty envious. However, I'm off to High Island this weekend. They've been getting 20+ species of warbler most days recently, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

This evening after work I chased a local mega rarity (Willet). I found my target, and two other birds, so my Year List is now up to 366.

364. Lesser Yellowlegs
365. Willet
366. Greater Yellowlegs.

Willets are rare in the Midwest, being mainly a coastal species. It was an Indiana state lifer, my second of the year (number 285).

wow...

haven't been here in a looooong time... 7631 unread posts... and don't think for a minute that i'm gonna go through every single one...

So my parents woke me up this morning, said something about orioles and feeder, and i'm still groggy... heard the Oriole part and bolted right out of bed... sure enough, my 36th year bird was outside... drinking out of the hummingbird feeder. the last time i saw an oriole in our yard was about this point last year.

Then a ruby-throated hummingbird stopped by, no biggie, he comes every year. Then a Pine Siskin... every two years they come... the first time I saw them was 2004... then nothing till 2006.... then nothing till this morning... next time, i bet will be 2010...

But those were all already on my life list... except for the redhead that drew dropped jaws of splendor... all three of us saw this beautiful bird, a woodpecker with a full head of red, at our suet feeder. never imagined seeing this beautiful Red-Headed Woodpecker in our backyard, even in our lifetimes! Sadly I was unable to get a picture, but i did spot it later in the morning clambering down a neighbor's tree trunk... so perhap it'll stay for a bit.

So after 4 years, going on my 5th year, I've finally managed to snag a check mark next to all the area's woodpeckers. Also managed to snap very decent shots of a Pileated Woodpecker in our yard. Even better there were two, but i was unable to get both on camera... drat. here's the Pileated:

My life list currently stands at 137 birds. Neighborhood list has over 60 species listed... a big number considering the size of the neighborhood. the street itself is not even 1/4-mile long... about 1/8th a mile past that is a small pond, and there are 15 houses on the street, and many surrounded by almost nothing but trees.

Year list now sits at 39, with the additions of:
1. Baltimore Oriole
2. Ruby-Throated Hummingbird
3. Pine Siskin
4. Red-Headed Woodpecker *Lifer

Spent the weekend Pom watching at Selsey Bill, so limited opportunities to add any new birds, will be going to Minsmere next weekend hoping to clear all the easy summer migrants still missing! However, whilst sat under the wall on Sunday we all leapt up as we heard the familiar (but not often heard in UK) trill of a Serin which fluttered above our heads for a minute before heading inland (first one for 4 years in UK).

215. Serin
216. Gropper

I can't keep up with you Reader, but then again i have to work during the week!
