New lifer

Saw a new 2009 bird at work this morning:
#166 Chuck-will's-widow.

It's a lifer, and a bird I've been hoping to see ever since I moved to Texas 6 years ago.

This morning I added four (4) year birds (three were seen today, and one I had forgotten to add when I saw it).

133. Chipping Sparrow
134. Franklin's Gull
135. Northern Rough-winged Swallow

(136.) Snowy Owl, the one I forgot to add. (Actually seen on February 26, 2009, at Breckenridge, Missouri.)

137. Winter Wren

In the evening a friend and I went out to some open, harvested fields north of Chillicothe a few miles and I added a couple more species to the day and year lists:

138. Short-eared Owl (x 5)
139. Great Horned Owl

Yesterday late afternoon / early evening added three though I didn't find the Rufous Nightjar that I was really out looking for (though I did hear a number of them).

210. Lilac-tailed Parrotlet
211. Tropical Screech-Owl

A trip down to Quintana this morning produced:

195. Dickcissel
196. Wood Thrush
An odd sweep of the plain winged vireos:
197. Warbling Vireo
198. Philadelphia Vireo
199. Red-eyed Vireo
200. Rose-breasted Grosbeak
201. Western Tanager (a lifer, and I haven’t seen a Scarlet or a Summer yet this year)
202. Cerulean Warbler (another lifer!)

I earned my lifers, as I had to drive home in an awful thunderstorm.

No birding today because I have to work. However, upon arriving at work, I had a new bird for the year flying overhead. My Year List is now up to 142.

142. Chimney Swift

Boo hiss to work.

Down to San Bernard NWR for migration festivities this morning. The mosquitoes were as bad as if it were August.

203. Yellow Warbler
204. Prothonotary Warbler
205. Swainson’s Thrush
206. Least Bittern – have all the herons and egrets with this bird
207. Scarlet Tanager – finally!
208. Swainson’s Hawk – two of them at the prison farm
209. Swallow-tailed Kite, a lifer, wanted this bird for years and I saw it from the car

Saw a lovely Yellow-breasted Chat and Cooper’s Hawk at the banding demonstration, can’t count them, of course. The Cooper’s was very angry—there’s no way I would have handled him.

Congrats

Congrats, Beeswing, on the Swallow-tailed Kite. What a beautiful bird!
We're off to High Island this morning to see if the recent spate of migrants is continuing.

Dave (Nightjar61), I guess you are going to "leave me in the dust" in regards to this year's state total. My wife and I are leaving Thursday for a visit with our eldest son over in Beijing, China. We will be there for a couple of weeks, so I will be getting a late start on all the new year birds coming into our area here in the states during that time.

However, I will be able to add a few "lifers" on my world list, as I have never been to Asia before!

Take good care of all the incoming birds so I can see them when we return!

Thanks, Jeff, I hope you had good luck at High Island. The weather was much improved today.

Went down to Brazoria NWR late this morning and got:
210. Yellow-breasted Chat, a lifer, and countable this time
211. Yellow-billed Cuckoo
212. Summer Tanager (and a spectacular male Scarlet)
213. Painted Bunting – also a nice sunny view
214. Merlin – finally saw one well

Also, down to a very soggy Quintana where I got:
215. Tennessee Warbler
216. Olive-sided Flycatcher

There were fewer Orioles around today but there were great flocks of Indigo Buntings. Very pretty.
