This winter there's an irruption of White-winged Crossbills over the northern portion of the Midwest and East Coast. I drove an hour north of here to add this bird to my Indiana State List (number 292) as well as my Year List. The crossbill and a merganser bring me up to 94 on the year.

93. Common Merganser
94. White-winged Crossbill

On January 20
71. Red Crossbill, one male and two females at our backyard bird feeder, Saint Joseph, Missouri

So there's hope for me yet! I keep looking at the flocks of crossbills wherever I see them (which is almost everywhere, this winter), but so far, they're all White-winged.

Drove a bit north of my place Saturday, hoping for Lapland Longspur, but no luck yet. Generally still very much in the deep freeze in Southern Ontario, so there isn't much else around at the moment. Did find a few 'easy' winter birds that I'd (unaccountably) missed earlier in the month:

Saturday, January 24
99. Downy Woodpecker
100. Red-breasted Nuthatch
101. Snow Bunting

Sunday, January 25
102. Hooded Merganser
103. Belted Kingfisher

Due to a mid-week blizzard that dumped 13 inches of snow and froze all bodies of water, birding was rather slow this weekend. However, I did get a year tick while driving down the highway this morning, bringing me up to 95 for the year.

95. Black Vulture

113 species on my northeast Spain hotspot list for January (25km radius circle around Balaguer). Highlights include Kittiwake (it's an inland site), Common Gull, Little Gull, Wallcreeper, Alpine Accentor, Ferruginous Duck, Bluethroat, Little Bustard, etc.

Pine Bunting, Black-winged Kite and Pin-tailed Sandgrouse occured outside 25km but within 50km.

Yesterday, at San Bernard NWR on the upper Texas coast near Freeport:
100. Ross's Goose
101. Mottled Duck
102. Lesser Scaup
103. Tree Swallow
104. Sedge Wren
105. Hermit Thrush
106. Northern Waterthrush (lifer)
A foggy and chilly morning with the skies filled with Snow Geese and Sandhill Crane. With the Tropical Parula in Brazos Bend last week, who needs to drive down to South Texas? Climate change has moved it up here.

February 01

Finally, I had the time for an excursion to a good-sized body of (open) water! Got to the west end of Lake Ontario, Hamilton harbour. Temperature for the region finally got above freezing for the first time this year, peaking at a whopping 3 C.

High winds made using the scope a bit difficult, but there were some good waterfowl near shore.

104. Mute Swan
105. American Black Duck
106. Greater Scaup
107. White-winged Scoter
108. Long-tailed Duck

Scanning a flock of around 200,000 Snow Geese (with some Ross's Geese) at Sugar Lake, Lewis & Clark State Park (about 20 minutes south of Saint Joseph, Missouri) I was able to pick out:

72. Hooded Merganser (1)
73. Ring-necked Ducks (10)

Seen south of Saint Joseph, Missouri (near Dearborn, Missouri)
74. Wild Turkey (a flock of about 20 birds)

112. Brown-headed Nuthatch (lifer)
113. Redhead

One hard and one easy. The Nuthatch after an hour of searching and a long drive. The Redhead in a pond in a park with a bunch of Ring-necked and Black-bellied Whistling Ducks when I was out walking with my brother this morning.
