Your count so far this year seems low. Is this because there are fewer birds around up there? Or worse weather? Or just you haven't been birding as much?
Jeff

Well, Jeff, you're quite right - and all three are true, to greater or lesser extent. Migration has been a bit behind, and the weather's been somewhat unco-operative - clear days that allow the migrants to zip by unobserved, alternating with rainy intervals with no chance of seeing anything at all.

But these are the minor reasons - the major reason is that I'm "changing the game", for interest's sake, doing a "green" list (muscle-powered transport only), based out of my house. Ergo, all the time I spend commuting to work, at work, or driving anywhere else (such as Pelee Is., where I spent the past weekend) is lost to the list. When you take all that away, yes, I've been spending very little time birding this year!

It's interesting what you can discover when you do something like this - such as, what you can (and cannot) find in city parks, and what an appallingly large portion of my life is spent behind the wheel of an automobile (nice beast though it is...).

I did mention something about this, but it was way back on Jan. 01, so not surprised ...

Cheers,
Peter

Good on yer, mate! I'm doing a similar thing but keeping a car list too. So, on foot I got to 103 and in total 172 with yesterday's Barn Owl, Portbury Wharf.

Sorry, Peter, I forgot about your green year.
Wouldn't work here, I'm afraid.Cycling isn't feasible in the Houston area. No bike lanes. (Not even many sidewalks.) I think the life expectancy of a cyclist here would be about 20 minutes.
Pity really because it's totally flat for 50 miles around. Mind you, the weather would make it tough in the summer: 90+F, usually with very high humidity, from mid-May to mid-September.
