A birding friend and I birded Squaw Creek NWR today and I was able to add five year birds to my 2011 Missouri List:

136. Lark Sparrow, near Forbes, Missouri, on the way up to the refuge.

Tomorrow we're heading down to High Island in the hope of seeing migrant warblers. So far it's been a quiet year for migrants there and all over our area. But we might be lucky - one day this week High Island had 20 warbler species plus Tanagers, Orioles, Buntings and Grosbeaks. Not one of its best days but not bad!

Two new birds today put me up to 434 for the year.

The grouse was an Indiana state lifer (no. 303), a bird I never dreamed of seeing in Indiana because they are close to being extinct in the state. Nice prolonged looks from ten to 20 feet away as it sat at the side of the road, showing no fear.

In addition to the birds listed above, I added Yellow Warbler to my ABA Area and Indiana year lists, which are at 156 and 149, respectively.

Brenda and I volunteered to serve at the Squaw Creek National Wildlife Refuge Headquarters information desk today. Before we assumed the duties there we drove around the ten mile auto tour loop to see what birds might be around. We observed about 50 species.

First of the year (FOY) species for me included:
