Curlew Sandpiper is listed as "Transient & accidental" on our Missouri Birds Checklist. I think they have been recorded in Missouri a few times.

I was on the scene once (with a few other birders) up at Squaw Creek National Wildlife Refuge (Mound City, Missouri) and caught just a glimpse of a few feathers hidden in shore side vegetation. That was all I got! Never got another look. So I did not count it.

* Some of the other birders there said that they did get enough of a look to count it.

So it goes!

Slow progress - nothing new since mid-May, despite the Northumberland reports of dozens of species not on this year's list (including several potential lifers) :(

Admittedly, I have had little time to go out birding, but when I have had, reported migrants/rarities seem to have disappeared. Maybe I can start a 2013 list of birds I have missed despite trying: black kite, purple heron (x2), great egret, temminck's stint (x2), collared flycatcher, redstart, etc.!

A decent weekend in Scotland and the Savi's warbler at Lakenheath today moves the year list to 248 and keeps my nose ahead of 2012

Today I went to the only place in the state that I know of where Clay-colored Sparrow is reliable. I found my target, as well as another species, so I'm now up to 297 for the year.

2 more today.

273. Golden Pheasant (undisclosed site near the Suffolk / Norfolk border).
274. Savi's Warbler Lakenheath (missed by 20 minutes at 8.30am this morning and it took me until nearly 3pm to get two brief views).

This afternoon while doing yard work, a bittern flew low over the house. It was a new bird for the year, as well as a state lifer (number 207). At least now I don't have to slog through swampy, muddy, and buggy reeds to add it to my state list.

298. American Bittern

This morning I went to high-altitude hemlock forests to look for birds I can't find around here. I saw one new bird, so I'm now up to 299 for the year. (I tried hard to find one more species so I could get to the 300 mark, but it wasn't to be).

299. Northern Saw-whet Owl

The owl was roosting in a nesting box that I accidentally stumbled upon as I was trying to track down a singing warbler. This was my first self-found saw-whet owl and only the fourth I've ever seen. I saw a staked out bird many years ago in Illinois, and the other two were seen when I participated in a banding program last fall.

In addition to the owl, I added Pine Siskin to my West Virginia year list.

Great bird - and one I've never seen!
I'm very envious of the rest of you because I'm not able to do any birding at present. The best I can hope for is maybe to squeeze in an hour or two on Saturday morning.

249 with a Little Stint at Minsmere today but the ticks are getting harder to find now.
I saw 82 species today at the reserve with just the one bird being a first this year.
