Retroactively - had a mystery Accipiter 23 Jan 2014 that was too far off to read properly, didn't get a chance to look at my photos until today, and it's clearly a Sharpie
173. Sharp-shinned Hawk

Today
174. Forster's Tern
175. Semipalmated Plover
176. Western Sandpiper

Four species over the weekend - including a lifer (red-necked grebe) - takes me to 100 species for the year, a whole month earlier than last year! Of course, I learnt last year that this doesn't signify a record list, just fewer new species later in the year! But still pleased, as that's been done without any major trips to add species.

Spent a couple of hours looking for additions to my county year list. Added two to my ABA year list:
136 Barn Swallow
137 Hooded Merganser

That's one bird more than I had seen by Feb 23 last year.

If it would ever get above freezing here in Missouri (and stay there for a couple or more days) then perhaps I could start adding some birds to this year's list!

I am still stuck on 56 species! And that was on the 3rd of February!!

That's what you get for living in the frozen north, Larry.

Had all the shoji wide open last night, Larry, and I was still tempted to go and sleep in the garden. Which we were allowed to fit air con. ;)

Perhaps I should head for Japan and get away from the frigid conditions here in Missouri! :eek!:

7 F this morning here and there seems to be no "warm-up" in sight! Below freezing temperatures are predicted for the next 10 days! I probably will just stay indoors and watch our bird feeders.

Not had much birding time recently and when I have been it's been painfully slow. Did manage two year ticks today though:

273. Taiga Bean Goose
274. Tundra Bean Goose

The Tundras are vastly outnumbered by Taigas in this part of Sweden so they were a nice addition.

Went radio-tracking off Refuge and stumbled upon a juvenile Ferruginous Hawk sitting in an open pasture.

This morning I went up into the mountains to check out a feeder at a ski area where some interesting birds have been reported. I found my main target, so I'm now at 111.

111. Purple Finch

I was able to get out a little bit yesterday and even though the temperature was low I was able to pick up a few more "year birds" for my Missouri List. There were a couple of spots in the iced over, oxbow lakes south of Saint Joseph where the water was being kept open by the multitudes of waterfowl using these small areas. Snow Geese numbering in the 100's of thousands. They were everywhere: in these isolated small pockets of open water, feeding in harvested crop fields, flying around in the air, etc. I had already ticked the Snow Goose, but here are the waterfowl which I saw which were not yet on this year's list.
57. Gadwall
58. American Wigeon
59. Northern Pintail
60. Green-winged Teal
61. Redhead
This is a slow movement forward in my listing, but at least I was able to advance if only in "baby steps". Things will really pick up when we finally get some above freezing temperatures.
