120. Marbled Godwit, (3) on edge of Horseshoe Lake & then flew to Lake Contrary (Saint Joseph, Missouri)
121. American Pipit, (3) in field near Muskrat Lake, Saint Joseph, Missouri
The Black-tailed Godwit flock on the Langfields is starting to really build up now, with just under 1000 birds present yesterday and this morning, Common Sandpiper have finally turned up, in numbers, along with a couple of LRP yesterday, and White Wagtail, Northern Wheatear, warblers and hirundines are still passing through.
Went looking for Whitethroats today in places where I recorded them in previous years. At the first site I found a male Whinchat with two other undetermined birds
83. Whinchat
At the second site there was another Lesser Whitethroat.
At the third site I found a Common Sandpiper
84. Common Sandpiper
and then I walked around and came upon a Whitethroat in a low bush at the edge of carp fishing pond (where I saw Lesser Whitethroat in 2012).
85. Whitethroat
So when I went home, in a bush a few buildings from home I found another Whitethroat LOL o
I had a busy morning, but was able to get out for a couple of hours' of birding in the afternoon. I found one new bird for the year, so I'm now up to 138.
Birding in the rain this morning around the oxbow lakes area just south of Saint Joseph, Missouri.
129. Cliff Swallow
130. Northern Rough-winged Swallow
131. Swamp Sparrow
132. Orange-crowned Warbler
Last Sunday:
239. Western Tanager 240. MacGillivray's Warbler (lifer)
241. Lazuli Bunting 242. Nanday Parakeet (lifer) - ABA status murky for CA birds... FL population accepted, CA not evaluated based on CRBC's stance against. Individuals I saw were from established population in the Santa Monica Mountains. So as long as they meet ABA conditions for established population based on my evaluation as observer, they are technically "countable." So, yes on my ABA lists sensu stricto, not on my CA / LA County lists sensu stricto.
243. Warbling Vireo
New entries in my 2014 Missouri List:
133. Green Heron
134. Yellow Warbler
135. Broad-winged Hawk
* a kettle of eight (8) circling higher and higher heading south.
136. Western Kingbird
137. Red-shouldered Hawk
138. Chimney Swift
Went to a group field trip today to a fishpond. I guess we would find more species if we didn't have so many children in our group who decided to play fencing with reed stalks
On my way home I stopped by the local forest to listen for Golden Orioles, but couldn't find any. Instead I found a flock of migrating
95. Spotted Flycatcher
139. Baltimore Oriole, down around Lake Contrary, Saint Joseph, Missouri.
I know I am rather lagging behind with my 2014 Missouri Bird Count, but things should pick up for me through the month of May. That is usually my best month in Missouri.
Saw a good selection of migrants today, even though cool, windy weather over the last couple weeks or so is slowing down migration from what it should be.
My first day around Tucson, AZ yesterday gave me 7 'lifers' and shoved my year total up to 434. The're on my other year list so I'm not duplicating them. Instead, I'm off for breakfast and a visit to the mountains. :t:
