Four new birds this morning, so I'm now up to 147 for the year.

144. Ruby-throated Hummingbird
145. Ovenbird
146. American Redstart
147. Northern Parula

The hummingbird was at my hummingbird feeder at first light this morning. I never know when the hummers will show up, so I hang my feeder early so it will be there for them when they do arrive.

140. White-winged Dove

* Transient and Summer Visitor Rare in Missouri (from Missouri Check List of Birds)
One was in our backyard this morning. I have only observed this species in Missouri 4 or 5 times in five decades of birding.

* It has only been in our yard once before (* first few days in April 1999)

I met my birding buddy at a wetland early this morning before heading off to work. In a little over an hour, I added five birds to my Year List.

148. Common Yellowthroat
149. Blue-winged Warbler
150. Eastern Kingbird
151. Palm Warbler
152. Rose-breasted Grosbeak

Then on the way home from work, I stopped at another site and birded from my car, as it was raining quite hard. At that spot, I picked up another bird for the year.

153. Green Heron

Spent the day wandering up dirt roads and stopping at any spot that looked 'interesting' on my way to Patagonia. That's the one in Arizona, just in case someone thought "Tucson to ...........? Nah, you can't do that in a day". ;) Picked up Phainopepla, Cassins Kingbird, Summer and Western Tanager, Bronzed Cowbird, Chipping Sparrow, Vermilion Flycatcher ( really common ) and Western Meadowlark for the year and Gray Hawk and Lillians Meadowlark were lifers and ended the day on a nice, neat 460 for the year. :t:

Since my last posting a couple of hours ago, I went out into the backyard to collect the eggs from the chicken coop and heard warblers in the woods near the edge of the yard. I ran in to get my binoculars, ran back out, and managed to see a couple of species of warblers and several other types of birds, one of which was a new bird for the year.

154. Blackburnian Warbler

I'd never seen this species in this county before, and really had no idea where to find one around here, although they are fairly common later in the spring in the high mountains a couple of counties away.

On my way home from work this afternoon I stopped at the only place around here where Purple Martins can be seen. I counted six martins in all.

Finally made my way to High Island last weekend, and though the windy, overcast conditions proved poor for migrating songbirds, I was still able to pick up a few year (and life!) birds. I'm hoping I can get back down this weekend (or the next) and pick up some of the target songbirds (e.g. Yellow and Black-billed Cuckoo, Canada/Kentucky/Blackburnian/Blackpoll/Redstart Warblers, Yellow-throated/Warbling/Philadelphia Vireos, Gray-cheeked Thrush, Veery).

California Gulch gave me 4 new species fo r the year, including Crissal Thrasher and Five-striped Sparrow, both lifers. My 2014 running total is now 491 ( because I'd counted Phainopepla twice ).

Since my last posting a couple of hours ago, I did a little birding in the yard and in the woods behind the yard. I picked up three new species, so I'm now up to 158.

156. Baltimore Oriole
157. Orchard Oriole
158. Chestnut-sided Warbler

I had seven Orchard Orioles and two Baltimore Orioles in one tree at the same time. It was a flowering apple tree, and I think they were eating the blossoms. I've never seen so many Orchard Orioles (which are somewhat uncommon around here) at one time, nor have I ever seen both species of orioles together in one place.
