The Columbidae are so underrated. One of my biggest birding goals/dreams is to see many of those incredible and fantastic looking fruit doves and pigeons that occur Asia and Australia. I have seen some species in Thailand, but most of my list is from the Americas. I have 52 species so far and need a lot more! Favorites and rarest species are: Maroon-chested Ground-Dove- saw several in seeding bamboo on Chirripo mountain, Costa Rica in 1994. Haven't seen a single one since! Emerald Dove- beautiful bird waltzing through the undergrowth in Khao Yai, Thailand. Violaceous Quail-Dove- Seen very few in viny, older second growth at the little visited but excellent Hitoy Cerere Reserve, Costa Rica. Key-West Quail-Dove- Was very, very pleased to have one fly in front of the vehicle near Puerto Escodido, the Dominican Republic. Gray-headed (White-fronted) Quail-Dove- Further up the road from the Key-West, we had several of these beautiful birds in the cloud forest.
