How many species of owl have you seen (1 Viewer)

The Saw-whets I saw banded were just ridiculous, this was in central Pennsylvania... a recording was playing, and every thirty minutes there had to be 10-20 more owls in the nets... crazy!

I like the Great Horned, it was being mobbed by crows... and the crows were apparently pulling feathers cause there were a couple on the ground underneath.

According to my latest Clements list it looks like I'm at 40 species at the moment. Some pretty common ones are obviously not there still though. Most upsetting though is probably Snowy Owl, especially since I lived in Minnesota for 18 years! Maybe this coming winter?!?

well there are good odds that Boreal and Tengmalms will be split in the future, according to gossip from some bird people at University of Wyoming.

I sadly have Boreal breeding in the mountains an hour from here, but they breed in winter, not exactly the funnest time to drive winding icy mountain roads at night.

Blimey, some pretty comprehensive lists here! Well, I've seen a grand total of three - Barn Owl (have seen quite a lot of those), a few Tawny Owls and a Short-eared Owl (which I didn't see very well, was suffering from an attack of my lactose intolerance when we saw it on Skomer).

I'm not that concerned about seeing more species (I really would like to see Little Owls at some point in the future though), if it were decreed that I'd not see a new species of owl but in compensation got regular views of Barn Owls I'd be more than happy! On holiday recently at Cley there was a Barn Owl that hunted in the field outside our cottage, one morning following the rough grass less than ten feet from our kitchen window... that was pretty cool!

Whiskered Screech (USA)
Vermiculated Screech (Belize)
Great Horned (USA)
Snowy (USA, Canada)
Cape Eagle (Zimbabwe)
Pel's Fishing (Botswana)
Spotted (USA)
Barred (USA)
Great Gray (USA, Canada)
Mottled (Belize, Costa Rica, Brazil)
Black & White (Costa Rica, heard Belize)
Northern Hawk (USA)
N. Pygmy Owl (USA)
Costa Rican Pygmy (Costa Rica)
Ferruginous Pygmy (USA, Belize, Costa RIca)

Burrowing (USA, Dominican Rep., Brazil)
Boreal (Canada)
N. Saw-Whet (USA, Canada)
Jamaican (Jamaica)
Long-eared (USA, Canada)
Short-eared (USA, Canada)

I've also heard Puerto Rican Screech, and missed Pacific Screech when a patron on a birding tour decided to take photos of one instead of telling the rest of the tour about it.

The two African owls were really before I seriously started birding. That was actually the trip that got me started. I had no idea how much of a "target" the Pel's was until I spoke to some other serious international birders.

Heading to Kenya in August. Hopefully I'll add a few more then.

Since the thread showed up again, I figured I'd update. Add:

Northern White-faced Scops (Kenya)
Greayish Eagle (Kenya)
Verreaux's Eagle (Kenya)
Buffy Fish (Malaysia)
Tawny-Browed (Brazil)
Pearl-Spotted Owlet (Kenya)

Brings me to 33.

We have only two, introduced barn owl and indigenous pueo (short-eared). Both quite easy to see. Too bad the endemic stilt-owls didn't make it to the present.

After my last trip to Minnesota my mainland owls are great horned and barred. Woo, I am up to 4! Next year I may go up to Northern Minnesota on my November trip and hope to see a new owl, but I have to check up on hunting season dates and areas. If this were a contest I'm on track to finish dead last. ;)

A bog standard UK/ Irish Owl list. Tawny Owl, Barn Owl, Little Owl, Long Eared Owl and Short Eared Owl. I'd love to see more as I'm pretty nuts about owls.

Hi all,

Out of 8 owl species that occur in Morocco, I have seen 5 species so far: Barn Owl, Little Owl, Marsh Owl (Asio capensis), Tawny Owl and Long Eared Owl. Attached is a Marsh Owl, though not a good photo.

jc, I think those Northern Hawk Owls are really awesome! And fierce looking also!

This guy had been sitting a bit far off in the woods, but as we pulled the car out it flew straight to us - shocking views! It made me feel a bit better about dipping on the Snowy.

Cheers,
Benji

Now 102, #100 was a magnificent Verreaux's EO in Namibia trying to force down a Hedgehog! also added Southern White-faced Scops in Namibia and the awesome Pel's Fishing Owl in Botswana. Not expecting to get any new ones around Asia this year but several possible in Ghana and Ethiopia in December. Finland next year might just get be close the Alan's amazing list!
