Well, never birded outside Sweden, so the list is rather short.

Eagle Owl
Ural Owl
Tawny Owl
Long-eared Owl
Short-eared Owl
Hawk Owl
Tengmalm's Owl
Pygmy Owl

and heard only, Great Grey Owl.

Not many people have such an impressive list just from birding in their home country.

Re: Brown Hawk-Owl in my "Owl List"

My wife, son and I heard a distinctive call of several Brown Hawk-Owls while walking the early evening on the campus of Tsinghua University, in Beijing, China on April 28, 2009. Walking in the direction of some of the calls we were able to locate some of the birds. We were able to view them quite close and witnessed a couple of the birds mating!

I am wondering if the Brown Hawk-Owls, aka. Brown Boobook (Ninox scutulata) I observed in Beijing were the now split Northern Boobook, Ninox japonica, based on geographic location. * Ninox japonica: south-eastern Siberia to south-eastern Manchuria, eastern China, Korea and Japan; winters southern Asia.

Not a very good list for me, but I'm happy so far!

1: Barn Owl
2: (Lesser) Sooty Owl
3: Boobook Owl
4: Barking Owl
5: Powerful Owl
6: Asian Barred Owlet
(and if these count)
7: Tawny Frogmouth
8: Australian Owlet-Nightjar

So all up only 8 species, but I am also only 13 xD

How many owls?

I have seen no owls, since starting counting at the start of the year, however I was once attacked by an owl on two consecutive summer nights in Cambridge UK. It drew blood.
