How many species of owl have you seen (2 Viewers)

The only owls I've ever actually seen are barn owls. There was one in particular that had a habit of flying directly over my car as I came home at night after classes... scared the crap out of me, since it always seemed like it was about to smack into my windshield. There were also barn owls that would regularly nest in my grandpa's deer stand each year.

I have heard great horned owls every now and then but never saw any.

I've seen quite a few species in my wanderings - if you are going to go to obscure parts of the world then you've got to make an effort to pick up the "difficult" species.

Up to 15 adding a Rufescent Screech-Owl on a recent trip to Ecuador. Of course, if and when they decide on what the "San Isidro Mystery Owl is I'll get an armchair tick. ;)

Rob

Forgot to say, my 120 is Clements based not "all taxa" or including Hutchinson & Eaton dubious splits! ;)

cheers, a

Ouch that hurts!! But turns out to be true!

Just added four stonkers in Finland;

Hawk-Owl
Northern Pygmy Owl
Great Grey Owl
Tengmalm's Owl

That puts me on 123 but I have 13 non-clements on their so still 10 behind Alan.

Crikey, not sure I'll get too many this year - have to dig some grim Megascops out of Bolivia ;)

Did you get "proper" views of the Tengmalms or was it "head sticking out of nest box" type views? I still need that one..PM details would be good if its an easy, good views one.

cheers, alan

Got good views of Tengmalm's in Sweden at the end of March, and not a nest box in sight! It did involve wandering around in a forest in the dark in thigh-deep snow for an hour with a powerful torch though.

Generally not done very well for owls on foreign trips (except Sweden) -

Barn Owl (UK)
European Scops Owl (Spain)
African Scops Owl (Kenya)
Northern White-faced Owl (Kenya)
Eurasian Eagle Owl (Spain, Sweden)
Greyish Eagle Owl (Kenya)
Verreaux's Eagle Owl (Kenya)
Snowy Owl (Iceland)
Northern Hawk Owl (Sweden)
Eurasian Pygmy Owl (Sweden)
Ferruginous Pygmy Owl (Trinidad)
Little Owl (Spain, Turkey, UK)
Tawny Owl (UK)
Ural Owl (Sweden)
Great Grey Owl (Sweden)
Long-eared Owl (Iceland, Spain, UK, Netherlands)
Short-eared Owl (Iceland, UK, US)
Tengmalm's Owl (Sweden)

Sounds superb - that's the way I'd like to see it to be honest; may be one day

We got both, one carrying a huge vole by the roadside and a nest job as well. There are more than 40 nests just around Kuusamo this year plus many around Oulu so plenty around!

I may have attached a couple of photos here, lets see...

Just returned from the Colorado Field Ornithologist Convention, and via one of the owling trips was able to add

Northern Saw-whet Owl, my 18th owl species

Heard but didn't see Flammulated, so do not count it on my list

and.......

Palau ( Scops ) Owl - Babeldoab, Republic of Belau ( yesterday ;) )

Cracking views just behind the rather grotesque pastiche they call the Capitol!!!!
