ID Handbook of European Birds - thoughts, comments thread (2 Viewers)

I have found a small trimming error on mine, just two pages so I can live with that, but I think the colours are all good - I’ll have to check further to be sure though.

It's like mine then, with that strong blue cast on the shadows of the tattler's breast. This might be the most egregious example but there's lots more, mostly light grays or shadows turning blue. It's nothing major, but this is such a fantastic book that it's really a shame the printing is not up to the standards of the rest of the book, especially considering all the work that went into sourcing the photos.

This is a screenshot from the pdf, I don’t think it’s a printing issue, I think that’s how the photo is, hence me not realising what you were seeing - maybe it’s a case of not all photos can be perfect, just so long as they show the ID features?

Having been notified that it was in stock two weeks ago, my copy still hadn't arrived by this morning so I phoned my supplier to enquire when I might expect it. They confirmed that there were quality issues, implied that they were waiting for replacement stock and told me it wouldn't be delivered before the end of this month. They didn't seem quite sure when new stock would arrive but I didn't press them on it.

I'd be happy to wait for a decent copy and mine also hasn't been despatched yet so have my fingers corssed!

Same here regarding waiting and a decent copy.

I gave Birdguides a call yesterday and was told all orders have been dispatched and are to be delivered by DPD, let's hope it's a good copy they deliver.

I have not received mine yet but suspect they are just getting rid of the faulty copies and leaving us to sort the good from the bad.

No it is the same in the Dutch edition.
The plates are cut out of pictures: obviously the reflection of the sea was not photoshopped out perfectly here.

Then I guess this would mean that the faulty copies are those with the badly trimmed pages? It would be good to know if those with "perfect copies" also have this issue. Again it's not a huge deal but I do find it distracting on some pages, it seems like it's mostly light greys taking on a strong bluish tint (the Pallid Harrier and Lesser Kestrel pages) or areas of shadow on white plumages becoming bluish (the tattler, Caspian Tern, Mistle Thrush flight shot, etc.).

It's a bit of a shame because the book itself is a stunning achievement, I have to take it in in small bits and pieces otherwise it's just too much. The amount of work that went in it is staggering.

Still waiting for mine to be delivered from Birdguides, the nice lady on the phone says it has definitely been dispatched but, no contact from DPD and we are coming up to a week since release, me wonders if there are other issues at play...we will see...
