I'm thinking the first is wood sandpiper and the second common snipe. Don't have much experience with these birds though.

I agree with Wood Sandpiper and Common Snipe.
The difficulty with the snipe would be the possibility of Pintail and Swinhoe's in the area. However, your bird shows a long bill, long tail, bright yellow-buff 'braces' on the back and white belly, which all favour Common.

I excluded both of those John for all the reasons you mention. (It did take a combination!)
