I'm with you 100% on that, with the emphasis on the word "most" in your first sentence. Some hides have their uses and some are very good, but all too many are substandard, badly designed and sited and too many end up spoiling the thing they were meant to enhance. I saw a useful adaptation on some new screen hides that they've just erected at the Guadalhorce reserve at Malaga. By the simple measure of cutting a semi-circular recess in the shelf below the viewing slots (radius about 5 inches or so), they've made it possible to stand a tripod between the bench and the slot to allow you to use a telescope while sitting, while still having a shelf for those using using binoculars or hide clamps. The down-side is that a new bridge over the river from the west has attracted lots of casual visitors, especially groups of cyclists, who use these hides as a place to gather for a drink and a natter. Before the only access was across the sand bar at the river mouth. Before the bridge went up you never saw a bike there. A couple of weeks ago there were dozens. Here's one of the hides, without cyclists.
