photo's from tuesday

turns out I may have seen two arctic terns on tuesday, for pic five the one on the right is definately an arctic tern but I think the oneon the left may also be. Really pleased to get the roseate with a definate rather than a I think it may be which is what i got last year, so I finally can "tick" this bird now, a lifer. Also great to find the arctic I've seen them at the farnes before but to find one for myself was nice.

I think your right. You can see that the bird on the left has very long tail streamers that extend beyond the tail. It looked like it had a black tip to the end of its bill however I think this is just a trick of the photo. Therefore I would say from what I can see on your photo this is 2 Arctic Terns with 2 Black-headed Gulls.:t:

Though if someone could prove me wrong that would be good, always happy to learn.:t:

Hi Pete the one on the left is Arctic has very short legs and tail streamers go past the wing tips.

Walked along the pier tonight, half dozen roseate terns, few common and
arctic terns about. Ringed plover. half dozen linnets, couple meadow pipits. Plenty swallows, one seemed to be trying to coax its brood out of the nest.

Hi Andrew

I think Martin may have been correcting you slightly and you may have meant wings. :t:

Regards

John

So he did. It sounds quite funny when you read my post now:

Yes ladies and gentleman it is clear than an Arctic Terns tail streamers extend beyond the tail.:-O

My mistake and as you guessed I did mean wings. I was just making a joke anyway.;) Martin certainly took it that way at least.:t:

I had a lovely time in South Tyneside yesterday; I think last time I birded here was on the 23rd of October 2009 so I was long overdue a birding visit. What was that for again? I can’t remember; it probably wasn’t anything important. ;)

I went to Sandhaven Beach first and got my friend to pay for parking. So me and my now 1 arm and 1 legged friend went down to the beach beside the pier at the very northern part of the beach. Nearly the first bird I got onto was a Roseate! We stayed for a while and kept scanning about, the final totals where as follows:
2 Roseate Tern
1 Arctic Tern
4-5 Kittiwake
Handful of Black-headed Gulls
Numerous Sandwich & Common Terns

My photos from yesterday:
Roseate Tern: http://www.flickr.com/photos/andrewkinghorn/4823814436/
Arctic Tern: http://www.flickr.com/photos/andrewkinghorn/4823813136/
Common Tern: http://www.flickr.com/photos/andrewkinghorn/4823813246/
Sandwitch Tern: http://www.flickr.com/photos/andrewkinghorn/4823814268/
Kittiwake: http://www.flickr.com/photos/andrewkinghorn/4823198597/

Then last night I went to the Storm Petrel ringing session again, 4 birds were caught this morning/last night. Fantastic to see/hold/smell!

South Shields again yesterday to try for a few pics of the Roseate Terns.
Pretty much the same birds as the last visit with at least 6 roseate terns, 2 arctic and a lot more sandwich terns which were flying in with some good sized sand eels and also small fish.
Still plenty common terns with young which were fighting over the catch and at least 4 RT divers well off shore, which the missus spotted with her bins.
All the roseate terns I saw were ringed.

Nice to see Andrew birdbrain o:D and his mate:t:, of course I had to point out which terns were which before I left ;), well! you know how easy he gets mixed up :-O.

sandwich tern, kittywake and common terns.

And a couple of comparison pics, which might help people, much like myself, who find It difficult to tell one tern from another.

1 - roseate tern and common tern to rear.
2 - 2 roseate terns and arctic tern to rear.
