Alrite!
Views from our pier.

Ventured down here between 11/ 12 this morning, at first the south end of Sandhaven held resting terns numbering of note 5 Roseates adults with 3 juvs. and 3 Artic adults.
Continued along the pier and more Roseates were feeding on both sides of here, also a large number of Auks in small family groups (mainly Guillemots) off the pier here...had to be 100+ birds. 3 Puffins flew south viewed from the end of the pier.
On the return journey along the pier a couple of more Roseate juvs with adults were heard and seen, and when i viewed the beach again 9 Adult Rosies were rested here.
Its a hard one to call the numbers of terns here because of all the constant coming and going due to feeding and disturbance...
But ive called 16 Roseates(5 juvs), 50+ Common, 3 Artic, 15+ Sandwich, on my visit today.
Because i had Max with me all pic,s are taken from the pier..Dog ban in force between 8am and 6pm this time of year on Sandhaven.
No waders at all on this visit!

Without looking at the book, i'm thinking pic 1 is a Common Tern, Pic 3 is a Roseate Tern and Pic 5 also a Common Tern

How did i do??
2 out 3 the last one is Roseate Tern.Roseate Terns look lot paler than Common also you can see the long tail streamers on the bird in pic 5.I think you can have a silver star for that.

LOL not bad - pic 3 has a bit of a pinkish colouration on its undersides and i've read here about that so that prompted me to opt for Roseate, Pic 1 has the black and red bill so i opted for the Common.. but Pic 5 also has black and red on the bill - total confusion |:S|

With Roseate Terns Derek it's always best to concentrate on the plumage details and the jizz. The colour of the bill can vary greatly some can have all dark bills especially in the spring. But this time of year they can show varying amounts of red on the bill. Also the pink flush to the underparts isn't really a good id feature many of them show very little pink or none at all.But having said that you do see one or two bright individuals.

I was down on my lunch break today (thanks for the tip off Steve!) and the numbers were slightly smaller than Steve and Martin seen, but all 3 species were there. Its good to have the three confusion species in a mixed flock so you can study the subtle differences between them. Obviously the adults are easier! But you'll be surprised at how quickly you pick it up.
Speaking of pink Roseys, there was a lovely one amongst the flock today.

Had an excellent day up at my Brothers today, birds seen around the garden included Blackcap,Spotted Flycatcher,GS Woodpecker,Willow Warbler,Tree Sparrow,Buzzard and most interestingly this bird of prey overhead which i didnt get a good look at as i only had time to point the camera press the shutter and hope for the best but I'm thinking maybe Hobby as it seems to have very long and thin wings,i thought it looked large chested more like a Peregrine but i think looking closer its actually just a very full bulging crop.

Anyone else got any thoughts on this bird?
