I was going to check Roker Park this afternoon but didn't have time.I remember that Firecrest because the same year you found a Pallas's Warbler in the park.Peter Colins and Robin Middlemas often have a look in there.Peter Colins had Gropper in the park a few months ago.I have seen YB Warblers,Black Redstart and the usual common migrants. As for Red Admirals they can vary in size usually the females are often bigger than the males .There seems to have been a influx of them in the last couple of days.

Black Redstart? Nice! I have still never seen Yellow Browed Warbler in the park- heard, yes, but have never managed to see one. I'm glad others check the park. It has to be one of the under watched sites on our stretch of coast. I remember that Pallas's Warbler, too. Wouldn't mind another of those again, this year.

Well, it's just started raining again. I sincerely wish I was not at work tomorrow! |:(|

Thanks to Ian's post earlier this afternoon, i decided to give Trow & the Lea's a go this evening. Met up with some bloke from Shields who i seem to remember from the telly back in October last year :-O:-O

Sir Dougie and i started off looking near some quite well known Sycamores and had reasonable views of a pair of Pied Flycatchers along with loads of House Sparrows. From here we had a walk across the Lea's towards the mound and saw loads of Whinchat.

Managed to get fleeting view of the Firecrest on the mound (thanks to Derek & young Kieran) before heading back towards the Bamburgh and seeing another load of Whinchat in the rough cut grass..

Whilst not the kind of return the lads got this morning / afternoon it was still great to have a good old natter in excellent company and see a few welcome migrants out of the ordinary :t:

Only one shot from tonight's wanderings....

Hi there, I have to say, I do love that photograph. If you don't mind my asking, what kit are you using?

Hi Andy, thanks, the kit i use is a Nikon D300 & D3, with a AF-S 500VR f4 and AF-S 300 f4 depending on conditions. I also use the Nikon 1.4 or 1.7 Teleconverters with both lenses.

This shot was using the D300 , 300f4 and 1.7TC - full EXIF is still embedded in the picture if you are interested.

Thanks Derek, I have to say that the wide array of camera equipment is confusing, but the results are quite amazing.

South Shields today:
Sandhaven beach near the pier, whinchat, wheatear, linnets, ringed plover, sanderling, turnstone, oyster catcher, redshank, meadow pipits, goldfinch, single black redstart, also single golden Plover. No sign of any terns.
Nice bumping into Ross who told me about the Firecrests on the mound.

Plenty wheatear around trow and managed a glimps of one firecrest which disappeared into the bush.

This morning i had to take my little granddaughter to Hetton so decided to carry on down the A19 and have a couple of hours at Saltholme. Bumped into Ian Forrest and had a nice chat, always a pleasure :t:

Saw Black Tailed Godwit, Greenshank, 4 Little Egret, Sparrowhawk, Goldfinch, 8 Pied Wagtail, Little Grebe & Pochard plus a good selection of Migrant Hawkers and Common Darters

Headed to Zinc Works Rd for a quick look before heading home and was pleased to see a male & Female Stonechat first i've seen since the heavy snow earlier in the year :t:

Couple of pics from this morning;

I saw one on Saturday but only a brief glimpse of it getting chased off by a Migrant Hawker.
Cowpen Bewley CPK was excellent for dragonflies last year especially for Brown Hawkers. The best place for dragonflies and damselflies this year has been Testo's pool.Seen 6 species of damselfly and 8 species of dragonfly.
