Steve, I'm afraid my dinners have been spent at work this week! I wish I could win the lottery. Just a couple of million would do, I'm not being greedy!

Who said theres nowt about?

Escaped work early today to get hour or so of good light(well that was the plan till it clouded over:-O).
Down to Trow, Little owl in its usual tree not much else around this part of the quarry just the odd wren.
The bush area was better, 2 Goldcrests,1/2 Chiffchaff, 1 Song thrush,1 Robin,3/4 Blackbirds and 2 Dunnocks., not bad for such a small area:t:...Squeaker still in a nest:eek!: thats the 3rd brood i know of, Handfull of Goldfinchs and Linnets around.
Went up onto Trow point next and did a bit of sea watching from here, 1 Artic skua fair way out and 1 R.t.Diver along with a scattering of Guillemots.
Then when i returned back to the steps here i flushed a small bird which flew just out of sight, it had landed on the steps and I had just enough time to ID it as a Female/imm. Pied Flycatcher!! before it flew off in the direction of the Mango pub and i could not relocate the bird.
Oystercatcher numbers are building again and a lot of the birds are taking full advantage of the mud created on the Leas by the Great North run.
Pic 1..Little owl at ease
Pic 2...Sleepy heads
pic 3..Noisy bugger!

Had a nose around a few South Tyneside haunts today. On the whole very quiet, but non the less enjoyable.
First stop Boldon flats, not much water so not much bird life. I did see something in the trees by the road side. I'd like to think it was a Yellow Browed Warbler, but if I'm honest it could just as easily been a Goldcrest(more likely too).
Spent 20 mins trying to find Cleadon Lane Flash to no avail (some directions/ grid ref etc would be great). I gave up and had a quick look at the ex flooded field at the academy. Not a dickie bird!
Spent half an hour at the car park just north of Souter lighthouse. The usual gulls, jackdaws, skems etc on the cliffs. A few oystercatchers, and Turnstones on the rocks below. 2 pairs of Gannets off shore but not much else. There were however 2 dead Guillimots in the sea both covered in oil. No matter how many times you see this sort of thing it is still highly distressing.
Last stop was the Leas and Trow. The highlights were 1 Wheatear 1 Stonechat and of course the ever dependable Trowl.
Apart from the sickening sight of the dead sea birds I had a really relaxing and most enjoyable day in South Tyneside.

Regards

Mick

Hi Mick heres a map (if the link works) for the Cleadon lane flash, its near the Whitburn end of the road on the left hand side just before the Charlie Hurley centre comming from Cleadon village. Was there myself today, will post the report latter.

Cheers Steve!!

I turned left instead of right and went up what I now know to be Boldon lane. No wonder I couldnt find it!! Did stumble across the Tile sheads though, so it wasn't a complete waste of time,

COASTAL CONSERVATION GROUP - TURNED OUT NICE AGAIN
Hi Folks,

Had a great morning in the hide at Clara Vale today, set off from South Shields at 7.45am with John Sulli and arrived there about 8.30ish armed and ready to photograph Kingfishers and we weren’t disappointed – thanks Derek, the beers are on me!:t:

Things started off pretty well, we had a distant female Kingfisher within half an hour at the far end of the pond but as the morning progressed it got closer and closer until it was fishing from a perch no more than 12 feet from us – absolutely beautiful and fabulous to watch!:-O

Other species to show from the hide this morning were, Rabbit, Black headed and Common Gulls, Blackbird, Robin, Wren, Woodpigeon, Stock Dove, Magpie, Carrion Crow, Jay, Nuthatch, Willow, Blue, Great & Coal Tits, GS Woodpecker, Green, Bull & Chaffinch, Chiffchaff, Moorhen and male Sparrowhawk….. also possible Goldcrest ( not clear views) and an unidentified distant wader flying at speed!.......and not a single Grey Squirrel in 4 hours – also seen a young Hedgehog dicing with death by a busy roadside on our way back home:eek!:…

All in all, an excellent morning made even more enjoyable with a flask of tea and a kitkat chunky – awesome!

Anyway, here’s a few photos – hope you like them

PS, Derek, nice too see you and great to meet Jim – happy snapping mate:t:

Dougie,

They're Grrrrrrrreat - i'm really glad the bird showed up for you, its always a gamble when you tell someone that a particular species is as regular as clockwork.

Plus a bonus Sparrowhawk - seems like you had a really great day ...

Well done Mate :t:

Well the best i could do today bird wise was amazing party of 6 Coal Tits in the garden never seen that number before in the garden.Certainly seems to be a exceptional autumn for them.Coal Tit was a garden tick just a couple of years ago.Seems very quiet in our patch for birds right now.Forecast for the next few days looks poor again for our area and the east coast. So i think west is going to be best again in the coming week. Its been a cracking autumn for yank birds so far they just keep on turning up in Ireland and Cornwall.Could be the best autumn on record for both asian and american birds the ways things are going at the moment.

A couple of uncommon visitors to my garden feeders yesterday a pair of coal tits and a male chaffinch.

Had a walk along Marsden Beach this morning with nothing unusual round. Nothing much to report from the Leas or the line of shrubs. As rokermartin says it is very quiet at the moment.

Coal Tit on my bird feeder this morning, must be a few about!............Laurence

Single Coal Tit on my feeders as well today, also Tree Sparrow - both first time visitors to the garden:t:

Good numbers of goldfinches and House Sparrows hammering the sunflower hearts as usual - they're going through about 3kg of them per week:eek!:

Cheers, Dougie.

Just heard from RBA probable Yellow browed warbler at Barmston with tit flock, north end of pond sounds like the path which runs along by the burger van, in a westerly direction.

Hi Steve, that's correct, walk past the burger van along the path then left at the top and half-way along the next stretch was where I saw it, but obviously it'll be very mobile, it was the call that put me onto it and it was with Long-tailed & Great Tit's. Hope it stays so I can get a better look but 99% sure it was a Y-b W.

Popped up to Whitburn cp very briefly this morning – 2x Herons, 1 Kestrel, 1 Curlew and a pair of Stonechats on the reserve, but otherwise quiet. Then a quick visit to Trow which produced most of the usual, plus one Speckled wood and a very tired Wheatear.

Cheers, Dougie

PS, Red Admiral pic is from my garden
