This is a message for any South Tynesiders, or anyone interested in events in South Tyneside:

Some of you may have received the South Tyneside Council magazine: Countryside News in the past. Spending cuts mean that it will no longer be published.

In order to find out about Council run countryside events, talks and activities, you will need to visit the council website where you can sign up to receive email alerts of these direct to your inbox.

The sign-up page is here:
http://www.southtyneside.info/article/8740/Countryside

Signing up is easy (all you need is your email address and postcode) and free.

So do it now! (Pass it on!)

If that link doesn't work, go to southtyneside.info, click on environment, then countryside, then events.

Started off at Whitburn this morning,3 Goldcrests along the edge of Shearwater were a first of the year for me. It was nice to see plenty of Linnets, Meadow Pipits and Skylarks about again. Made my way along the front and back up through Roker park where I had cracking views of this Sparrowhawk I stood underneath it for about 20 mins even attracting a small crowd of passers by,after a while it flew to the other side of the pond but when i was just about to walk away it flew out towards me carrying a Blackbird and i just managed to grab these couple of shots.

Also 4 Mallard and 2 LBB Gulls on the pond.

Is it a trick of the light making a LBBGull mantle shade look paler or is the gull on the left a Yellow-legged Gull?

Just been looking at that photo myself Andrew. You got any other photos Adam of those two gulls - esp the left hand bird as Andrews said.

Gotta feelin they're both LBBG's but at different angles causing the differing of the mantle colours.

Yeah I think its just the photo mate, I'm pretty certain they were both LBB Gulls walked passed them twice and stopped and had a good look at them both.

This is the only other photo I have, i did have another which i deleted where both birds were facing forwards like the right hand bird and in that one both mantles were equally dark the same as the right hand bird in this one.

Nice one Andy
theres lots of pairs of Barnies right down the A19 corridor, especially the Seaham to Billingham stretch.

Another one for the S'land yearlist
right time right place to see everything go up & scatter.... looked for Peregrine, but it was a nice bit fat Goshawk which was doing the terrorising :eek!:

The area seems to be doing well this year...... Will have to have a tot up, & get a figure sorted before the floodgates open & all the summer migs pile in......

3 Avocets at the WWT at the moment, saw them on Wader Lake today. Also saw a Redpoll last week in Hawthorn wood.
Think we'll have a look through WWT with the family this weekend & check out the developments, havnt been for a while

The WWWT has been tremendous in its work in helping to preserve endangered species but Washington has really been the poor relation in terms of local ornithological merits compared to Slimbbridge etc, these new initiatives hopefully will be great for all.
May take a year a so to mature but must be a good thing.

Waxwings

Sorry, i'm new to this and wasn't sure how to make a new post. I just wanted to let people know about a flock of waxwings I saw about an hour ago. They were in the car park of Clays garden centre at Peel industrial estate in Washington. Thank you.
