I know the new edition has altered in that the drawings are next to the write up so for the field it is an ok book. I still think the one I have found will be way ahead of it and have far more info, although not really suitable for the field. Thanks for the link though.
I'm a bit confused as on the cover of the book its says 'Butterflies of Britain and Ireland' but the review is of 'Butterflies of Britain and Europe'.:h?: Richard Lewington is very good and I must admit I prefer drawings in guide books to photos. I have R Ls books for odonata. Incidently I was going on a tour with R L as leader, that is until I found out the exorbitent (sp) cost and went to Hungary with a friend and stayed at accomodation owned by an excellent Butterfly guide. I actually have the old edition of the Collins Butterflies of B + Europe. Having used it I really dont like it, as the drawings are seperated from the write up. It's very awkward to use. I bought it very cheaply on Amazon and learnt the hard way why it was so cheap. The other thing that I find annoying is that all the plants mentioned are given only their scientific name (I guess that is a must as it covers Europe) and unless you know them all you have to constantly look things up. I know the new edition has altered in that the drawings are next to the write up so for the field it is an ok book. I still think the one I have found will be way ahead of it and have far more info, although not really suitable for the field. Thanks for the link though.
