Then got totally engrossed in the Lions, not thinking of someone at home wondering what the hell was going on. My phone sits forever on silent, so naturally missed their calls to see if I was still alive. Finally, when I left the Lions and checked the phone, a slightly frantic person got through, I think they thought that rather irresponsible too
Oo, this rings a bell ;) Almost never take a mobile with me when travelling, but for some reason did to Namibia a couple of years back. In one of the smaller camps at Etosha, Lions killed a Zebra right up against the rickety fence supposedly keeping animals out of the camping area (not very effective - Warthogs, etc, kept wandering past). Anyhow, at about 10 p.m., I decided to get some photographs of the Lions and edged up to the fence - the Lions were not best pleased and one charged the fence, jumping against it and sending me jumping back in reflex as the Lion towered above. Then Lions and I settled down, but the noise was amazing as they squabbled just three metres away, etc. Then I remembered the phone in my bag somewhere - got it out, was surprised to see reception, so phoned a friend back home and whispered 'Listen'. Amazing sounds went over the phone, then whisered, 'Got to go, Lions are peering this way again' and mentioned one had jumped at the fence earlier. Then got totally engrossed in the Lions, not thinking of someone at home wondering what the hell was going on. My phone sits forever on silent, so naturally missed their calls to see if I was still alive. Finally, when I left the Lions and checked the phone, a slightly frantic person got through, I think they thought that rather irresponsible too ;)
