Is a Golden Oriole possible in Dorset? (1 Viewer)

Today, near Blandford Forum, I saw a sudden flash of yellow from startled bird. It was only a fraction of a second, so I could have mis-seen, but is there the slightest chance it could have been a Golden Oriole?

It's only Rock and Roller but I like it
Probably 49 times out of 50 it will be the yellow rump of a Green Woodpecker but a Golden Oriole in Dorset in July with weather coming off the continent isnt out of the question.

To answer your specific question, "is there the slightest chance?":

Yes. There is the slightest chance. But do check greenpecker which is far more likely.

Golden Oriole is a possibility, but its better to be wrong than miss out on a good bird.

It could have been worse, you might have thought it was something really rare and then you would have been subjected to a whole load of abuse as is the custom on here ;-)

Shame it was not a Golden Oriole, my favourite bird.

I once made a Wheatear into a Great Grey Shrike, that's probably my worst.

The whole abuse on forums (fora?) thing is so annoying, though. I'm an opera singer, and you should see what people write about singers on YouTube. I've more or less escaped so far, but I imagine it's only a matter of time...

Hi Richard, sorry to digress, but did you know that there's a species of tit named after you? Weigold's Tit of west/central China, previously thought to be a subspecies of Willow Tit. Apologies if you're already aware of this, or find it uninteresting :t:

Don't worry! Happens all the time - even when they actually mean me! I like to think my name means 'like gold', but apparently, it will originally have been 'Wiegengold' - someone who weighs gold for a living. If only!

I wouldn't worry about it, someone once made a Western Reef Heron out of a juvenile Little Egret......and had everyone racing down to Stanpit. Was a nice day out though 3:)

Actually there are a lot of people on fora named after you - dicks!

I went to my first (and probably only) opera this year, the WNO's version of Madame Butterfly with Cheryl Barker (not Cheryl Baker as my wife thought!) as Butterfly - it was fantastic. I might risk Carmen but that is the limit for me, give me Rach's 2nd piano concerto any time!

I don't remember the WRH for a Little Egret, for me anything small white and herony is a Little Egret, I can't be arsed to look at feet colour etc etc yawn yawn. However I do remember in 1984 climbing a tree at Titchfield Haven to see a Little Egret because it was quite rare - seems strange today.

Both this and the GGS incident and a whole lot more are recounted in my book by the way......as if you didn't know.

Groan, I hear you say!

Well I have to try to drum up sales somehow, it's not as if I am some big corporation and nobody else has complained.

But if it makes you feel better then (assuming you are not a mod, apologies if you are) contact one of the mods so they can ban me.

My original reply seems to have either been deleted / modded / or not posted because I pressed the wrong button.

It's hardly in your face advertising saying that there are some stories in my book.

If it makes you feel better then complain to the mods so they can ban me

Well, if you're singing the role of Wotan, you'll always have Thor's hammer handy!:t:
