Isle Mull in june or July? (1 Viewer)

Hi all,

I'm planning a trip with some Spanish friends to the Isle of Mull in 2007. What I've heard tells me that early June would be better than July, especially for the puffins, but the first week in July would suit the group better.

Can anyone tell me what we're likely to see and/or miss coming at the start of one month of the other?
Many thanks in advance

I think for seabirds, either would still be very good. July would probably give a better chance of Storm Petrel, at least if you're going out on boats.

Birds won't be singing as much in July but some breeding birds are likely to be more conspicuous. Raptors should be fledging by then, which means that they'll be more visible. Early June would certainly give you a better chance of seeing Corncrake. There'll still be some calling in July but they'll be harder to see as the vegetation will be very high by then. Most passerines should still be fairly easy to see in July, even if they're not singing.

Hi Nick
There should be plenty of Puffins on the Treshnish isles, the first week in July. I've been out there near the end of July and there were still good numbers of Puffin, Razorbill, common and Black Guillemot. We also saw Manx Shearwater, Arctic and Great Skua.
As Andrew has said the raptors should be easy to find but corncrake could be a problem in July.

I heard a corncrake on Iona. (about 100 meters from the point where the ferry from Mull lands).
I was there the last week of June this year. Unfortunately very cloudy, so no Golden Eagles. Make sure to watch the Sea Eagles. there is a place in the south east where you can see them. I do not know what is was called, but I get the information from a tourist office in a small village.

Hi Nick,

Although it's not quite the same I was on Skye in the first week of July this year, and I saw everything on there, including Corncrake (there were still a couple singing) Eagles were easy enough, and there was loads of Puffins and Tysties, and we had a few Stormies on the ferry from Skye to the Hebs as well. June could well be easier for seeing stuff, but it's still easily do able in July.

Good luck.
