January 1st joint Birdforum list (2018 edition) (1 Viewer)

For anyone who's only just seeing this thread, there's still time to add species to the lists - as long as you saw or heard the bird on 1 Jan not 2 Jan, it's fine to do the forum posting today.

Thanks to Gander and Jonny721 for their work on the the UK list. I'm working on lists for continental Europe and the USA - as usual I'll be grateful for all corrections as I do tend to include single species twice under different names due to lack of familiarity with local naming conventions.

Here's Team USA so far, which I think is 120. Team North America is the same figure as all the Canadian species reported so far have also been reported from the USA.

I can add a few to continental Europe:

White-backed Woodpecker, Middle Spotted Woodpecker, White-tailed Eagle, Great Grey Shrike

Think everything else I saw is already listed.

I'm shamelessly going to nick this for the new John's Mammals thread, seems to be the complete list for BFers in Britain on 1 January unless anyone is late to the party:

Common Seal
Grey Seal
Red Fox
Fallow Deer
Roe Deer
Brown Hare
Rabbit
Grey Squirrel
Red Squirrel
Brown Rat
Bottlenose Dolphin

Eleven species - I think that's not bad for a single midwinter day.

Cheers

John

99% sure the wee beastie that scuttled across the road ahead of me as I cruised through mid Wales pre-dawn was a Wood Mouse. Make of that what you will. :t:

Humans are definitely tickable, they're native, not introduced, and self-sustaining, not artificially maintained o:D

The UK list is at 161. I'm more confident of this total as Jonny731's helpful sorting into taxonomic order makes it easier to spot duplicates. I don't have the software to do this myself.
