Thanks everybody. It was a fun one to paint. It took a while too because it is one of my bigger ones at 30x40. I have one of a snow leopard going now though that is 30x48 - actually it has been going for about 7 years!! I just got back to it because of a special I saw on the tube about snow leopards.

Here is a painting that I have been messing around with. I changed a couple of mallard in the first image into wood ducks and turned the middle one's head to add a bit more life into the painting. It is whistling but the bill isn't quite right so I'll fix that. From a distance it looks like it is sticking it's tongue out. The painting will also have a bit more habitat and some more detail in the birds. There are a couple of other rough spots also but I thought I'd post and see if anyone has any thoughts, critiques, ect. before I finish it.
Cheers,
Peter

Peter that's another great piece from you. The addition of the wood ducks has lifted the pic considerably, I'm already looking forward to the finished work.

That shrike is a beauty, I'd love to catch up with one some day.

Criticise it? ...it's perfect!

This is one of the best birds I've ever found while local patching so I find it rather endearing. Even thought it's a black and white drawing of a black and white bird the different tones and textures really come through.

I agre with everyone else, this is an excellent piece and full of life, but as I also know that an artist can't be happy once they've found a 'problem' (I can't!) and as you asked. I wonder if the sticking-out tongue (which I find really really endearing!) may be due to the lower mandible being a bit too far forward perhaps? Bearing in mind that I've never sketched wood ducks, and wouldn't know!

I sketched this portrait of a shore lark some weeks ago and decided to add some colour. Not the best idea, I think, because the brown on the head got a bit too dark and the shadows on the head vanished...But nevertheless, have a look at it.
I'll better stick to drawing black and white ;).

I think you should certainly carry on with colour, this is very good, and you can only get better as you practice, beautiful portrait.

you've fixed the wood duck perfectly, a beautiful painting, I'm now trying to figure out how you manage to get the subtlety of the half mist/half light. Brilliant.

Yes - a resounding success Peter - the atmosphere is wonderfully rendered - laden with moisture, just perfect for sneaking up on waterfowl, although the crack of a twig will have them away. Great stuff!

I agree with Nick- carry on with the colour- You will not progress unless you experiment and aren't afraid of making mistakes. great work- enjoy it and lets see some more.
