A short summary of the aftermath of this. When the Lithuanian Department of the Environment published its Draft Order to list Golden Jackal as invasive, having already added it the list of species that can be hunted without limit all year, I challenged the decision, writing directly to the Minister of the Environment and various officials heading certain departments. After quite a bit of effort, during which I managed to get articles into national media outlets and wrote a paper (that, as a side effect, is due for imminent publication in the journal Zoology and Ecology), the Department suspended the listing and invited me to present my argument to the Council of Invasive Species in the Ministry. At this meeting, the arguments against listing as invasive were accepted and the proposal to list were dropped ...Golden Jackal will not be listed as an invasive species in Lithuania. At the same meeting, I argued for a complete removal of the species from the hunting list (from an angle of European law, conservation norms and the real potential of additional illegal killing of Wolf by persons accidentally or intentionally killing Wolf in the 'mistaken' belief they were Golden Jackals). The hunting lobby is very strong in Lithuania and has quite some sway over the Ministry ...I was never going to completely win this side of the battle, but did achieve a far better outcome - the hunting season of Golden Jackal is to be coordinated with that of Wolf (October-March). So, significant forward move by Lithuania.
