Sheet use & predators

Hi Jonathan,
By about this time last year i had stopped using a sheet with my trap as i had noticed after a while that there were no longer moths on it, concluding that the local birds had latched on to the convenient early morning food supply. I havent used it at all this year & have`nt noticed any reduction in catch numbers. I site my trap near the neighbours panel fence & there are usually quite a few moths on this in the morning, but obviously not as conspicuous as they would be on a sheet. During the working week i tend to sort the catch out when i come home from work & there are normally still plenty of moths on the fence even then, some having barely moved during the course of the day. I think this will probably all change now that the school holidays are here as my 2 kids & their attendant friends will be regularly running amok about the place !

Yipee! Dry night forecast, moth trap out at last.
Had a leopard moth on the curtains the other night, never seen one of those - amazing.
Tonight had plenty of Drinkers and first Ruby Tiger - like that one.
Will wait and see what turns up by morning....

July has been very good here in Norway, the best nights with 800 moths and 100 species. Things are a bit slower now after temperature dropped and having a periode with heavy rain. But last night was quite good, and I add a few photos of some that might be rarely or never seen in UK.

Syngrapha diasema
Autographa macrogamma

I'd be easily pleased too then; never seen one. Just 14 records of that species locally but you are in the right part of the world for it I guess.

anyone else getting bombarded by hordes of common rustic agg. atm? oh well, at least the LYUs are still in single figures.

i haven't actually had a single NFY this past week, just been getting lots of the regulars. hopefully it's building up for something really nice to turn up.

Same here - lots of Common Rustic aggs, Underwings building in numbers but little/nothing new. Last night looked promising but still only 100-150 moths and all the regulars.

A selection of moths from Brittany where I have been for most of this month.

I now know why elephant hawkmoth is called this! I've not seen one before, only small elephant.

Now back home I'm running the trap tonight ... always exciting!

Stunning moths Nerine.

Extremely quiet session tonight with only 53 moths trapped resulting in just one NFY in Lesser broad bordered yellow underwing.

Amazing photos of amazing looking moths Nerine. Iron Prominent is the only one of those that I have ever seen. Thanks for sharing.

Very quiet here too with similar numbers to you Dave. Nothing different although both Coxcomb and Pale Prominents were nice. Even the common species are dramatically down in numbers.

It does seem that virtually all the more common species have really tailed off this last week or so as you say Jonathan but in general trap yields are down as well and out of my last seven or so attempts i think i have had just one night where i managed to reach 100 individual moths and three of these,Riband wave (14),Marbled beauty (12) and Dark arches (9) made up over a third of the numbers on that particular occasion.
