I have never knowingly caught Dark Spectacle but could easily have overlooked them. One of the local gurus pointed out the three separate streaks at the apex of the wing which is distinct from a general dark smudge on the ordinary Spectacle - something I had never heard of before. Ken's photo shows this really well.

I was not able to get a “profile” view of the moth before it flew off Steve, surprise, surprise was that when I reviewed “profile” images on line, I found it somewhat “resembled” to my eye, BuffTip?

Just 10 species in and around the trap this am, however a particular favourite, probably only my 2nd/3rd occurance, just couldn’t totally frame it.😩

Nice Dusky Sallow, Ken.

Went to a local event this morning where we had a minimum of 38 species identified.

Amongst the glamour were Jersey Tiger ( a second individual not in the trap was being pulverised by a Robin!), Tree Lichen Beauty, Rosy Footman & Oak Nycteoline.

Juniper Webber was a new one for me.

A lifer for me and my garden this morning - Oak Nycteoline. I almost passed it off as a micro until I remembered a friend showing me one he had caught a few weeks ago.
Also Marbled Beauty, Dun-bar and Lychnis all NFY, along with a few dead Water Veneers.

One of my largest ever catches this morning, 189 moths of 53 species. It has taken me all morning going through everything, and I have given up on two micros that would be new for me.
Boosted by a big influx of 60 Willow Ermines.
A whopping 18 NFY including a lifer (Argyresthia semifusca) and a garden tick (Oak Hook-tip).
Time for lunch now.

A whopping 18 NFY including a lifer (Argyresthia semifusca) and a garden tick (Oak Hook-tip).
Time for lunch now.

I had 215 moths of 70 species last night, but just one new for the garden (Latticed Heath) and ten new for the year.

Here's a salutary lesson from last night. Turned in thinking I'd potted myself a major regional rarity, based on the first pic attached, taken just before midnight, prior to it going in the fridge, and me going to bed. On closer examination this afternoon though, it seems that all I have is a brown tailed Yellow-tail. Ho-hum. So don't go identifying major rarities on single features while very tired! Lesson learned? Hope so. Doubt it.

A mate of mine always takes his moth gear with on his trips. He’s currently in Uganda and sent this a couple of days ago.

Walking around a local area leading a bird & insect walk we found at least 3 Jersey Tigers both settled & flying. when they take flight they look like a very exotic butterfly! All were the regular form as lutescens is often quite common in London.

Also a Box Moth sitting, looking like a dead leaf, a Dusky Sallow sitting below a flower head of a Spear Thistle.

I have this as Banded Tussock Moth, and not Sycamore Tussock as I've seen plenty of caterpillars for Banded. This is first adult so assuming same.

After a week’s absence, I lit up my pot last night, noting it was clear and a “bit of a moon” showing.
Just eleven of ten, highlights- Festoon, Bird’s Wing, Peppered Moth, August Thorn, Buff-Tip and BBYUnderwing.

Pretty tidy night last night, Double Lobed & Small China-mark were garden ticks, and plenty of year ticks besides (Chinese Character, Phoenix, Small Rivulet, Bordered Pug, Yellow-barred Brindle, Light Arches, Nutmeg, Lesser Broad-bordered Yellow Underwing).

Also, a few other highlights from the previous couple of catches that I never got round to reporting on - Small Yellow Wave, Dot Moth, Drinker, Beautiful Hook-tip, Broad-bordered Yellow Underwing, Pebble Prominent.

Garden macro yearlist now on 160.

A timely reminder from one of my county recorder team that the hot weather over the next couple of nights will easily kill off a lot of moths in traps left unemptied after first light. So if you are going to run your traps tonight and tomorrow night it is important to be up at first light to process them and put the moths in shady places asap. Plus moths will be very active.

last night was good for micros here, with another 50 Willow Ermines and another 14 species ID. Not so good for bigger moths.
